Google Confirms Android Show Ahead of I/O 2026: Android 17, Wear OS Updates Expected

Google has officially announced the return of the Android Show: I/O Edition, continuing the separate Android-focused event strategy it introduced last year.

The virtual-only event is scheduled for May 12 at 10:00 AM PT, which translates to 10:30 PM IST in India. Like last year, the livestream will happen ahead of Google I/O 2026 and will stream through the company’s official Android YouTube channel.

Google Confirms Android Show Ahead of I/O 2026

And honestly, this split makes sense now.

Google I/O keynotes have increasingly become dominated by Gemini AI announcements, developer tools, cloud services, and experimental projects. Android updates still appear there, but they’re no longer the only headline attraction. Giving Android its own dedicated showcase allows Google to spend more time talking about actual platform features without rushing through them.

Android 17 Could Be the Main Attraction

Google hasn’t officially detailed what will be announced during the Android Show, but Android 17 is expected to be the biggest focus.

This year’s Android development cycle has also moved unusually fast. Google already released four beta updates for Android 17 between February and April, which is earlier than what we usually see.

From what’s been previewed so far, Android 17 doesn’t seem to be going through a massive visual reinvention. Instead, the update appears more focused on refining the overall experience with smoother animations, better multitasking, tighter privacy controls, and performance optimisations.

That may not sound flashy at first, but these are usually the changes people end up noticing daily.

Floating Apps, Notification Rules, and More

One of the more interesting Android 17 features currently being discussed is something called Notification Rules.

Based on beta previews, users may be able to create custom notification behaviours for specific apps or contacts. So instead of simply muting everything, Android could allow more granular control depending on who’s messaging you or which app is sending alerts.

Google is also reportedly working on universal app bubbles. These would essentially let apps open in floating interactive windows, making multitasking feel more flexible, especially on foldables and larger-screen devices.

Other features spotted in beta versions include:

  • A new Hub Mode for widgets
  • Better cross-device compatibility
  • More privacy-focused contact permissions
  • A redesigned screen recording interface
  • Closer ChromeOS integration

None of these features have been fully confirmed for the final release yet, but they do give a clearer idea of where Google is heading with Android 17.

More Than Just Phones

The Android Show probably won’t focus only on smartphones either.

Google is expected to share updates related to Wear OS, Android Auto, Android TV, and Android XR during the livestream. With Android now spanning watches, cars, TVs, tablets, and mixed-reality devices, the event could be more ecosystem-focused than previous Android showcases.

Google itself has already teased that 2026 could be “one of the biggest years for Android yet,” though the company hasn’t explained exactly why.

We’ll likely get those answers on May 12.
