Google Transitions Mobile Users from Google Assistant to Gemini

Google is transitioning its mobile users from Google Assistant to a new AI-powered upgrade called Gemini. This change aims to offer smarter assistance. Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app, explained that when Google Assistant was launched in 2016, advancements in natural language processing and voice recognition improved user interactions significantly.

Marquardt highlighted that nearly a decade later, generative AI is reshaping our engagement with technology. He stated, "Nearly a decade later, we're experiencing another platform shift-this time, generative AI is reshaping how we engage with technology." The core mission remains unchanged as Gemini redefines the assistant experience with AI at its heart.

Gemini's Expansion and Features

Millions have already switched to Gemini and find its AI-driven features beneficial in daily life. To broaden access, Google plans to upgrade more mobile users to Gemini over the coming months. By the end of this year, the classic Google Assistant will be removed from most mobile devices and app stores.

For those whose devices do not meet Gemini's system requirements, Google Assistant will continue functioning for now. The Gemini app is available on Android phones, including foldables, Android tablets like the Pixel Tablet, and devices with at least 2GB RAM running Android 10 or higher.

Future Plans for Gemini

Since its launch last year, Gemini has expanded to over 40 languages and more than 200 countries. The team continues refining the experience for users familiar with Google Assistant. Recent updates have introduced frequently requested features such as playing music, setting timers, and performing actions from the lock screen.

Beyond these updates, Marquardt noted that Gemini surpasses Google Assistant's capabilities. Features like Gemini Live enable fluid conversations across multiple modes. Deep Research transforms Gemini into a personal research assistant, showcasing AI's growing potential. "And we're just getting started," he added.

Google's Broader Vision for Gemini

Google also intends to extend Gemini's reach beyond mobile devices. Plans include bringing it to tablets, cars, and connected accessories like headphones and watches. A Gemini-powered experience will also be introduced to home devices such as speakers, displays, and TVs.

Further details about these expansions will be shared in the coming months. Until then, Marquardt assured users that "Until then, Google Assistant will continue to operate on these devices." This transition marks a significant evolution in Google's approach to digital assistance by integrating advanced AI capabilities into everyday technology interactions.
