Identity Check will be integrated into the theft protection settings on Android 15 devices. It requires biometric verification for accessing crucial account and device settings when users are outside pre-set trusted locations. This includes actions like altering device PINs, disabling theft protection, or accessing Passkeys. Trusted locations can be set by users and may include places like home, gym, or office.

The primary goal of Identity Check is to ensure that if your phone is not in a trusted location, it verifies the user's identity before allowing access. This feature goes beyond typical theft protection measures that activate when a phone is forcibly taken. It addresses scenarios where someone might attempt to use an unattended and unlocked phone without permission.

Google is broadening the reach of its theft detection lock feature, now available on devices running Android 10 and newer versions. The company collaborates with GSMA and industry experts to tackle mobile device theft comprehensively. This collaboration involves sharing information, tools, and prevention strategies.

An upcoming GSMA white paper, developed in partnership with the mobile industry, will offer further insights into safeguarding individuals and organisations from device theft. Google's proactive approach aims to cover various scenarios where phones might be stolen or misused.

The Identity Check feature will initially launch on Pixel devices with Android 15 and Samsung Galaxy devices featuring the One UI 7 update. Users should anticipate an update soon for their devices.
