Google Launches Earthquake Alert System for Android Devices in India
In a significant move to enhance disaster preparedness and safety, Google has introduced its earthquake alert system for Android devices in India. This innovative system leverages smartphone sensors, such as accelerometers, effectively turning Android devices into small seismometers capable of detecting tremors.
Developed in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Seismology Center (NSC), this earthquake alert system is poised to provide early warnings and safety recommendations to Android users in India.

Localized Alerts in Multiple Languages
One of the noteworthy aspects of this initiative is Google's commitment to ensuring accessibility to a wide audience in India. The earthquake alerts generated by this system will be available in local Indian languages, thus breaking down language barriers and ensuring that critical information reaches a diverse user base.
Two Types of Alerts: Be Aware and Take Action
The earthquake alert system operates on a two-tiered alert mechanism:
- Be Aware: Users will receive a "Be Aware" alert when they are experiencing MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) levels 3 and 4 shaking during an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 or higher. This alert is unobtrusive and will not produce any sound if the Android device is in Do Not Disturb (DND) mode or silent mode.
- Take Action: The "Take Action" alert is more urgent and is issued to users in areas where MMI levels have reached 5 or higher during an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 or greater. Unlike the "Be Aware" alert, the "Take Action" alert will override the device's notification settings, including DND, and play a loud sound. Additionally, it provides users with specific safety instructions, such as taking cover under a table or moving to an open area.
Early Detection and Alert Precision
Google's earthquake alert system boasts the ability to detect potential earthquakes through a network of Android smartphones, often providing alerts seconds before the tremors are felt. This early detection can be crucial in ensuring that individuals have sufficient time to take appropriate safety measures.
Activation and Compatibility
To receive earthquake alerts, Android users are required to have devices running Android 5 or later versions, as well as active Wi-Fi or cellular data connectivity. Location services must also be enabled on their devices. Users can enable earthquake alerts through their device settings:
- Option 1: Open Settings > Safety & Emergency > Earthquake alerts.
- Option 2: Access Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake alerts.
