Google Pixel 6a to Get Battery Safety Update via Android 16 Starting July 8

Google Pixel 6a users have reported overheating issues, with two devices catching fire. In response, Google is introducing a mandatory software update to address potential battery overheating risks. This update aims to enhance battery management by reducing capacity and charging performance on affected devices after reaching 400 charge cycles.

Starting July 8, 2025, all Pixel 6a phones will receive an automatic software update to Android 16. However, only devices identified as "Impacted Devices" will experience changes in battery management. These changes activate once the device's battery completes 400 charge cycles.

Battery Management Changes

The software update will automatically download for all Pixel 6a users starting July 8, 2025. After downloading, the device will restart to apply the update. For Impacted Devices, new battery management features will activate post-400 charge cycles to mitigate overheating risks.

Users of Impacted Devices may notice shorter battery life between charges and reduced charging performance after these features activate. Additionally, there might be temporary changes in how the battery-level indicator displays capacity as the phone adjusts to its revised capacity.

Eligibility and Support Options

Not every Pixel 6a is affected by these changes. Only specific devices identified as Impacted Devices will undergo these adjustments after reaching the specified charge cycles. Users can confirm their eligibility on Google's registration page. The update does not affect other Pixel models like the Pixel 6 or 6 Pro.

If you own an Impacted Device, you might qualify for a free battery replacement. Starting July 21, 2025, replacements are available at walk-in repair centers in several countries including India and via mail-in repair in the United States and India.

A reminder notification will alert users when their device reaches 375 charge cycles. This ensures that users are aware of impending changes before they occur. If your device isn't impacted, your battery management features remain unchanged.

For those who prefer manual updates, you can download the latest software starting July 8, 2025. Otherwise, it will automatically download when your device is charged and connected to the internet.
