Google's Pixel 9 Could Address Connectivity Issues with New Modem and Gain Satellite Connectivity
While many smartphone users might not consider the modem when choosing a new device, it has become a significant concern for Pixel owners in recent years. Connectivity issues have been a persistent problem, with Pixel 6 and later models experiencing dropped calls and weak signals, especially after the March 2024 update. Since 2021, Google has been using Samsung's Exynos modems instead of Qualcomm, which has been identified as a possible cause of these issues.
Now, reports from Android Authority indicate that Google's upcoming flagship devices, the Pixel 9 and Pixel Fold 2, will feature the Samsung Modem 5400. Although some might have hoped for a Qualcomm modem, the Samsung Modem 5400 is expected to offer faster speeds and improved energy efficiency compared to its predecessors.

Software Improvements The software stack has also been upgraded, promising better stability and fewer issues related to connectivity. This improvement is a significant step toward addressing the longstanding problems that have plagued Pixel phones.
Satellite Connectivity: A New Frontier One of the most intriguing additions to the Pixel 9 and Pixel Fold 2 is the support for 5G non-terrestrial networks (NTN) through 3GPP Rel. 17, enabling satellite connectivity. This feature will initially be powered by T-Mobile and will allow for texting. Google is also reportedly developing a "Satellite Gateway" app to facilitate communications with emergency services.
How Satellite Gateway Works The app will guide users through a set of questions to help emergency responders assess the situation. Users will also have the option to notify their emergency contacts. Due to the nature of satellite connectivity, specific alignment is required for connection, and Google has designed animations to assist with this process.
The Future of Google's Connectivity Solutions Google is also in the early stages of developing a 5G tablet, codenamed "clementine," which will feature the same Samsung Modem 5400. With these advancements, Google aims to tackle the connectivity issues that have prevented its Pixel phones from breaking into the top five best-selling smartphones.
