HMD’s Fusion Smartphone Breathes New Life into the Modular Phone Concept: Everything You Need to Know!

HMD has unveiled its latest smartphone, the HMD Fusion, at IFA 2024. This device features a modular design with a six-pin connector on the back, enabling new types of cases that enhance the phone's functionality. These cases, referred to as 'Smart Outfits' by HMD, are reminiscent of Moto Mods.

HMD Fusion Innovative Smart Outfits

Each Smart Outfit instantly modifies the phone's hardware and software, unlocking new capabilities, unique interfaces, and improved performance. One such case includes a built-in ring light for both front and rear cameras, offering customizable lighting and camera effects via the camera app.

The rugged case is designed for outdoor adventures, providing IP68 ratings for dust and water resistance. also supports wireless charging with magnets and includes an in-case-of- It emergency (ICE) button. Another case offers an industrial-chic design with minimal protection while maintaining a sleek look. Additionally, there are colored Casual Outfits available for selection.

HMD Fusion Kit and Repairability

HMD has also introduced the Fusion Kit, an easy-to-use open-source software and hardware developer kit. The company states that at least one third party is committed to creating their own Outfit for vertical solutions. Like the HMD Skyline, the Fusion boasts Gen2 repairability with easy repairs for display, back cover, battery, and charging port through iFixit.

HMD Fusion Specifications

The HMD Fusion features a 6.56-inch HD+ LCD screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and up to 600 nits peak brightness. It is powered by an Octa Core Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 4nm SoC with the Adreno 613 GPU. The device comes in multiple RAM options: 4GB, 6GB, 8GB, or 12GB LPDDR4x RAM and offers 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage expandable up to 1TB via microSD.

The phone supports Dual SIM (nano + eSIM) and runs on Android 14 with promises of two OS updates and three years of security updates. It features a dual rear camera setup with a 108MP main sensor equipped with EIS and a 2MP portrait camera with f/2.4 aperture along with an LED flash. The front-facing camera is a substantial 50MP sensor.

Its dimensions are 164.15×75.5×8.32g, weighing in at 202.5g. The device is dust and water-resistant (IP54). Connectivity options include 5G SA/NSA, Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz + 5GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, GPS/ GLONASS/ Beidou, and USB Type-C.

The smartphone is equipped with a robust 5000mAh battery supporting 33W wired fast charging; however, the wall charger is not included in the package. The HMD Fusion includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor for security.

HMD Fusion Pricing and Availability

The HMD Fusion will be available in a single Black shade and is priced at €249 (approximately Rs 23,250). In the UK it will cost £199 (approximately Rs 22,000). Flashy, Rugged, Wireless and Gaming Outfits will be released later this year priced between €39 and €99. This innovative approach by HMD aims to provide users with enhanced functionality through modular accessories while maintaining ease of repairability.
