Honor 9 Lite gets Face Unlock via OTA update

Honor 9 Lite has started getting the Face Unlock facial recognition feature via the latest OTA update. On Wednesday, Honor, the sub-brand of Huawei rolled out an OTA update that brings the Face Unlock feature. It is claimed that this update will reach all the Honor 9 Lite devices in India by March 5. Notably, the Face Unlock feature of Huawei debuted initially on the Honor View 10 that was launched in December last year.

The users of the Honor 9 Lite can check for the latest OTA update by navigating to Setting → System Updates. Do remember that the OTA update will be rolled out to the Honor 9 Lite smartphone in batches and it might take a few days for all the devices to be updated with the same.

The Face Unlock feature lets you unlock the smartphone with your face. All you need to do is just access the feature from Settings → Privacy and then look at the front camera. On doing so, the facial recognition technology will identify your face and enable the unlocking function in addition to the existing PIN, pattern or fingerprint unlock. Honor also states that the feature will detect the position between the phone and you to adjust the direction of unlocking.

Honor 9 Lite First Impressions

Back in January, Honor upgraded the Honor View 10's Face Unlock feature with the rollout of a new software update. Initially, it was available for checking the notifications but it was later upgraded to detect when the users are actually looking at the screen. It is aimed to turn off the display when it is idle. Along with the same, the company also rolled out the ability to find out the positioning between the users and the phone in order to adjust the orientation of the display and to detect if the users' eyes are closed.

Honor made these tweaks to the Face Unlock facial recognition technology so that the same is as advanced as the other facial recognition technologies launched by companies such as OnePlus. We can expect the company to bring about additional improvements in the future to keep it competitive.
