Huawei recently unveiled its new flagship devices the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro. While the smartphones are yet to be tested extensively in real life scenarios, the camera test results are out.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro scores 97 in DxOMark camera test

The popular smartphone camera benchmarking and consulting firm DxOMark has now tested the Mate 10 Pro and it seems they have some good things to say about the handset's cameras. Basically, the firm has given a total score of 97 points which is just one point short of Google Pixel 2 (currently leads with a score of 98).

Interestingly, after achieving such score Huawei Mate 10 Pro has managed to surpass Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 and Apple's iPhone 8 Plus. Further, DxO has given Mate 10 Pro a score of 100 for its photo output and 91 for video; comparatively, the Pixel 2 had scored 99 and 96 respectively.

Notably, for scoring and analysis of the smartphone cameras, DxOMark engineers capture and evaluate over 1500 test images and more than 2 hours of video in both controlled lab environments and in natural indoor and outdoor scenes.

"The Huawei Mate 10 Pro excels for still photography, where it achieves a phenomenal Photo sub-score of 100 points, matching the currently highest Photo sub-score of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Its key strengths are good exposures, particularly in indoor conditions; a very good wide aperture mode, which produces a mild, but attractive bokeh effect with few artifacts; and outstanding autofocus performance. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro is a very capable performer in video mode, too, achieving a video sub-score of 91 points. Video autofocus is fast and accurate, with good tracking capabilities and generally low levels of noise," DxOMark notes in its report.

Mate 10 Pro scored very high marks for its exposure and contrast, color, and autofocus in both photos and videos, and it even beat the Pixel 2 in regards to bokeh portrait shots, noise, artifacts, and zoom. However, DxOMark has also stated that the Mate 10 Pro can sometimes display exposure instabilities when shooting consecutive pictures and artifacts are sometimes visible in shots of the sky.

But all in all, it looks like Google Pixel 2 will likely face some stiff competition from Huawei's freshly release date 10 Pro flagship.

Talking about the cameras, the Mate 10 Pro sports a dual-camera setup at the rear which is engineered in collaboration with Leica. The setup includes a combination of a 12-megapixel RGB sensor and a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor of f/1.6 aperture, Leica optics, and dual-tone LED flash. The dual-camera setup features include 2x lossless zoom, phase detection, and laser autofocus, along with 4K video recording capabilities.
