India’s Smartphone Market Surges in Q1 2024: POCO Surpasses OnePlus, Vivo Takes the Lead
The Indian smartphone market continued its growth streak in the first quarter of 2024, with shipments rising 11.5% year-over-year according to a recent report by the International Data Corporation (IDC). This marks a positive trend, extending the growth observed in the previous two quarters.
New Launches and Promotions Drive Growth
Several factors contributed to this positive performance. Smartphone manufacturers launched a wave of new devices across various price segments, catering to a wider range of consumers. Budget-conscious buyers benefited as brands ramped up promotional activities, particularly for premium smartphones. This strategy, coupled with the introduction of microfinancing schemes, helped make smartphones more accessible.

Rise of 5G
However, the report also highlights a shift in consumer preferences within the smartphone market. While the budget segment (under $200) remains the largest, its share has dipped slightly. Conversely, the premium segment (above $600) witnessed a decline, possibly due to a slowdown in economic growth. The biggest gainer was the super-premium segment (above $800), driven by strong sales of Apple's latest iPhone models, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15.
Another significant trend is the rise of 5G technology. The number of 5G smartphone shipments reached a record high in Q1 2024, capturing nearly 70% of the market. This widespread adoption can be attributed to a decrease in the average selling price of 5G phones, making them a more attractive option for consumers. Interestingly, the budget segment within the 5G category witnessed the most significant growth, indicating a growing demand for affordable 5G connectivity.
Online Channels Gain Ground
The report also emphasizes the increasing importance of online channels for smartphone sales. Online retailers continued to gain ground, accounting for over half of all smartphone sales in Q1 2024. This trend is likely to continue as eTailers offer competitive prices, attractive discounts, and convenient delivery options.
Vivo Takes the Lead, POCO Surpasses OnePlus
The brand landscape also saw some interesting changes. Vivo emerged as the top smartphone brand in India, surpassing the long-standing leader, Samsung. This shift can be attributed to Vivo's diverse product portfolio catering to various price segments and its strong presence in offline stores, particularly in smaller towns and cities.

Xiaomi's sub-brand, POCO, also made significant strides in Q1 2024. The brand's focus on offering feature-rich smartphones at competitive prices resonated with consumers, propelling it past another competitor, OnePlus, in terms of shipments.
Apple maintained its dominance in the super-premium segment, with strong sales of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15. Meanwhile, Motorola registered the highest growth among the top 10 brands, primarily driven by its strategy of launching a series of affordable smartphones.
Cautious Optimism for the Future
Looking ahead, the outlook for the Indian smartphone market is cautiously optimistic. While the initial months of 2024 have shown positive signs, challenges remain. Attracting new smartphone users, particularly in rural areas, and mitigating the impact of the pre-owned smartphone market are ongoing hurdles. Additionally, the dominance of established brands is weakening as smaller players and sub-brands gain market share. IDC analysts predict modest overall growth in the mid-single digits for the Indian smartphone market in 2024.
