Indian Government Announces Cuts to Import Duty on Some Mobile Components

The Indian government has announced a reduction in import duty on some components used in mobile phone manufacturing from 15 percent to 10 percent.

This move is expected to benefit global companies like Apple and Xiaomi that have set up production facilities in the country. In recent years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted India as a smartphone manufacturing hub, leading to significant investments from major players in the industry.

Import Duty Reduction on Mobile Phone Components

The finance ministry has reduced import duties on parts such as battery covers, main camera lenses, back covers, other mechanical items of plastic and metal, GSM antenna, and other parts.

Additionally, the import duty on inputs used to manufacture these components has been cut to zero. This reduction is expected to encourage global manufacturers to establish large-scale mobile assembly lines in India and substantially increase exports of mobile phones.

Comparison with Other Manufacturing Nations

Prior to this decision, duties on mobile phone parts in India were the highest among six comparable manufacturing nations, including China, Vietnam, Mexico, and Thailand.

This led to the industry lobbying for tax reductions to make India more competitive in the global market. With the new duty cuts in place, India is more likely to attract further investments in the mobile phone manufacturing sector.

Impact on Mobile Phone Exports

India has seen a significant increase in mobile phone exports in recent years, with the presence of global manufacturing companies. According to industry estimates, mobile phone exports from the country doubled year-on-year to $11.1 billion (roughly Rs. 92,174 crore) in the fiscal year to March 2023.

This figure is expected to rise to $15 billion (roughly Rs. 1,24,560 crore) in the current fiscal year, further bolstering India's position as a major player in the global mobile phone manufacturing market.

The Indian government's decision to reduce import duties on mobile phone parts is a strategic move that is poised to attract more investments from global manufacturers, enhance competitiveness, and boost mobile phone exports.
