Apple announced the iOS 11 at the WWDC 2017. While this iteration of iOS will be released along with the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and iPhone 8 in September, the iOS 11 beta 7 has been rolled out to the developers now.
Having said that the beta 7 version of the operating system has been rolled out, the public release of the same is not too far away. As mentioned above, the stable version of the update will be released for the iOS users in September. The iOS 11 will bring about many new features and updates to the iPhones and iPads over its predecessor - the iOS 10.
Almost all the apps and features seem to have received a revamp with the iOS 11. Interestingly, it will also open up possibilities for augmented reality in gaming.
The iOS 11 has brought many subtle design changes. The in-built apps have been refined with bolder fonts and darker lines. Some apps such as Calculator and Phone have a redesigned look with round buttons without borders and darker fonts. A few other apps such as Calendar and Reminders retain the same design as in iOS 10. The Control Center, Lock Screen, Messages, etc. have got significant updates and we will detail each one below.
With iOS 11, you can customize the Control Center that has received a major redesign. The Control Center has brought back the consolidated look with new bubble-style icons. There are two sections at the top for connectivity and Apple Music controls. There are other controls for volume, brightness, Do Not Disturb mode, rotation lock, flash light, AirPlay Mirroring, Camera, Calculator, etc. It is also possible to use the 3D Touch in the Control Center to unlock more commands.
Apple has merged the Lock Screen and Notification Center into one in the iOS 11. When you do a downward swipe to access the notifications, the Lock Screen will come down with the missed notifications displayed on it. The notifications those you have already seen will be displayed on a second swipe in the middle of the screen. An upward swipe from the middle of the screen will take you to the Home Screen.
The new Dock on iPad can be seen on any screen. With a single swipe, you can open any app from the Dock instantly. It is possible to customize the Dock with the apps that you use frequently. The Dock is smart enough to change as you work with app suggestions based on the ones those you have opened recently and the ones you were using on any other Apple device. The app suggestions will be displayed at the right of the Dock.
It is common that each iteration of iOS will bring about improvements to Siri. The iOS 11 is no stranger in this aspect. Apple has made Siri smarter with on-device learning so that the personal assistant can understand your preferences and learn about your interests so that it can anticipate what you need next in a better way. Siri uses synced information from iOS and Mac devices to improve your user experience. The cross-device syncing will make Siri faster and smarter and there is end-to-end encryption as well to secure the data on your devices.
The App Switcher on iOS 11 makes it easier to multitask on your iOS device. With the Dock, you can open a second app and use both the apps at the same time. You can use the second app by dragging the same in Slide Over at the left and use both in Split View.
The Apple Pencil for iPad Pro will be made more powerful with the iOS 11 and will get a more natural feel that before. The Apple Pencil can be used for all types of tasks such as taking notes, being creative, etc. You can take a screenshot faster and easier and mark up a PDF for later user with the Instant Markup feature. The Apple Pencil can be used on the Lock Screen to start taking notes and the same will be saved in the Notes app. It is also possible to draw or jot down important notes. Also, you can search the handwritten words in Notes. With the Apple Pencil, you can add inline drawings in Mail.
Drag and Drop
iPad gets Drag and drop that lets you move content such as text, photos, and files between two apps. The large multi-touch display of iPad makes it a bliss to drag and drop content anywhere on the screen.
The iOS 11 version does not include Apple Cloud as it is a part of the Files app. The app is similar to the Finder app on Mac. Files will contain the content stored on iPhone or Pad, iCloud and other cloud services such as One Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. It is well organized and offers quick access to the content stored on any iOS device. You can search and view the recently accessed files as well.
The Camera app on iPhone is taken to another level with the new iOS 11 platform. The Camera app can render more expressive photos, more natural skin tones, and filters that will give a great output. The camera uses a next generation compression technology that lets you click photos with the same quality as earlier at half the size.
The new Document Scanner in the Notes app will automatically sense and scan a document, crop the edges of the same and remove any glare or tilt. You can edit the same to fill the blanks or sign it with the Apple Pencil. It is also easy to save or share the scanned document.
The AirPlay 2 lets you control your home audio system and speakers at your home. You can play a song and adjust the volume in any room with this feature.
The improved Messages app on iOS 11 makes it easier as it lets you share stickers, emojis and games with your friends by just swiping across the redesigned app drawer.
The QuickType Keyboard on iOS 11 will help you just touch and hold the emoji key and choose one-handed typing so that the keys will instantly move closer to wherever your thumb is on the screen. This way, it will be easier to type on your iPhone in one hand.
Apple Pay, the peer-to-peer payment service will let you send and receive money. You can connect a debit or credit card to the feature. You can send money even in Messages with iOS 11 via standard fingerprint authentication. The received funds will be available in a new Cash Card found on Apple Pay's Wallet. This card can be used to make purchases via Apple Pay.
New Apple Store
The Apple Store has been redesigned in iOS 11 so that you can discover new apps and games. You can see daily stories from experts, lists of app types of apps, a dedicated Games tab, etc. This is the biggest update brought to the Apple Store.
With the new Apple Music, your friends can help you find new songs and artists. You can create your own profile on Apple Music where you will be able to see playlists those are shared by your friends as albums. This way, you can get to know what they are listening to often.
Apple has come up with a new ARKit API for the developers. This is designed to let the developers create high-quality augmented reality apps by using the sensors and camera in the iPhone. With ARKit, an iOS device can identify a surface such as a table and virtual objects can be added to the same. The computing power of the iPhones and iPads will make the AR capabilities of the ARKit impressive.
Maps in iOS 11 will make your travel smoother as you can see detailed maps of major shopping centers and airports all over the world.
When you buy a new iPad or iPhone, iOS 11 will make the process of setting up the device easy with the Automatic Setup feature. This feature transfers personal settings, iCloud Keychain passwords, and preferences to your new device automatically.
