iOS 26.5 Update Brings Encrypted RCS Messaging And Maps Enhancements

Apple is preparing to release iOS 26.5 for iPhone users, with the update expected before WWDC 2026 begins on 8 June. The software focuses on secure RCS messaging, a new Pride-themed wallpaper, and upgrades to Apple Maps, and could start reaching compatible devices as early as next week.

RCS support in the Messages app will take a major step forward with this release, as Apple plans to add end-to-end encryption for RCS chats. The feature will first appear in beta form and will work only with supported mobile carriers, with availability expanding in stages.

iOS 26.5 RCS Messaging and End-to-end Encryption

Apple’s release notes state that RCS conversations in Messages will gain end-to-end encryption, giving users extra privacy for rich media chats. However, encryption for RCS will not switch on for everyone at once. Instead, Apple will roll it out gradually and share a detailed list of compatible carriers before the public launch.

Alongside secure RCS messaging, iOS 26.5 will also refresh personalisation options. A new Pride Luminance wallpaper will be offered, described as dynamically refracting a spectrum of colours. Users will be able to download and apply this design, which aims to match the updated visual style Apple introduced with iOS 26.

The Maps app is due to gain a Suggested Places feature with this update. It will show recommendations influenced by nearby trending spots and a user’s recent searches. These suggestions are meant to make everyday navigation quicker, with Maps learning habits over time and offering more relevant routes and locations.

iOS 26, released last year, already changed how iPhones from iPhone 11 to the iPhone 17 series look and feel. Apple introduced a “liquid glass” design language across the Lock Screen and Home Screen, giving interface elements a more fluid, responsive appearance, while also updating many system apps and tools.

iOS 26.5 and Previous iOS 26 Upgrades

With iOS 26, Apple expanded Apple Intelligence features across the system. Tools such as Genmoji let users create custom emoji-style art, while Image Playground helps generate personalised visuals. Live Translation also arrived in Messages, FaceTime, and regular calls, allowing real-time language support during conversations on supported devices.

Core apps received functional upgrades as well. Messages added improved filtering for unknown senders, new options for chat backgrounds, and extra group tools including polls and Apple Cash integration. Photos and Maps saw layout changes for easier browsing, while Wallet gained smarter boarding passes and Digital ID in select regions, supported by a new Preview app for document handling.

iOS 26.5 will therefore build on last year’s visual and functional changes rather than replace them. With iOS 27 expected to bring larger shifts when unveiled at WWDC 2026, this interim update aims to improve privacy in RCS messaging, sharpen personalisation, and refine everyday apps like Maps for current iPhone owners.
