iPhone 16 Pro Series Rumored to Get Major Camera Upgrades With New Ultrawide Sensors
Apple's upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models are rumored to receive a significant boost in camera capabilities. According to a tipster on Weibo, the new devices could feature a 48MP ultrawide camera, a notable upgrade from the 12MP ultrawide camera found in the iPhone 15 Pro series. This enhancement could result in better photo quality, particularly in low-light conditions, and improved macro shots.
Improved Ultrawide Camera
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to include a 48MP ultrawide sensor, reportedly 1/2.55-inch in size with 0.7µm pixel size. This upgrade is anticipated to produce 12MP pixel-binned shots, enhancing clarity in low-lit environments compared to previous models. The increased megapixel count could also enhance the overall photo quality and provide greater detail for printouts and macro photography.

Main Camera Upgrades for Pro Max
The iPhone 16 Pro Max is also rumored to receive a custom 48MP Sony IMX903 sensor, a step up from the IMX-803 sensor in its predecessor. This new sensor is larger, at 1/1.14-inch, and is expected to include a 14-bit analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital gain control (DGC), which could improve the overall image quality.
Anti-Reflective Technology
Both iPhone 16 Pro models might incorporate anti-reflective technology which could minimize lens flare, resulting in sharper and clearer photos, especially when shooting in bright or backlit environments.
Stacked CIS Image Sensor Design
In addition to these enhancements, Apple is rumored to be adopting a stacked CIS image sensor design for the new iPhone Pro lineup, potentially improving the camera's performance and efficiency.
Telephoto and Zoom Capabilities
The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to carry forward the tetraprism zoom (periscope lens) from its predecessor, potentially offering 5x or higher zoom capabilities. Meanwhile, the Pro Max might feature an Ultra Telephoto or Super Telephoto zoom. Despite these advancements, the telephoto module on both models is expected to match, aligning with earlier predictions by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
With these rumored upgrades, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are poised to deliver enhanced photography experiences, addressing key areas such as low-light performance, zoom capabilities, and overall image quality. As always, take these leaks with a grain of salt.
