Apple’s iPhone 16e Surprises with Strong Sales, iPhone 17e Expected by May 2026
Apple's push into the entry-level smartphone market is gaining momentum. The iPhone 16e, which replaced the discontinued iPhone SE (2022), has reportedly outsold its predecessor despite a muted response from critics.
With that in mind, trial production for the iPhone 17e is reportedly in the works, hinting at a 2026 launch window. This suggests Apple is settling into a yearly update cycle for the "e" series, similar to its flagship lineup.

The iPhone SE Is Gone, But the "e" Series Is Here to Stay
Apple's decision to retire the SE branding marks a significant shift in how it approaches the lower end of its lineup. Instead of relying on dated designs (like the SE's home button), the iPhone 16e offers a more familiar modern iPhone experience with updated hardware.
The 16e shares many features with Apple's flagship models but scales back certain elements to maintain a lower price point. This blend of modern design with selective premium features seems to have struck a chord with buyers.
According to a leak from Chinese tipster Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, Apple is already preparing production lines for the iPhone 17e. Trial runs are expected to begin soon, with a launch timeline pegged for May 2026.
Apple's Changing Strategy
A new report from Counterpoint Research suggest that Apple's updated approach is paying off. In Q1 2025, Apple led global smartphone sales, grabbing 19% market share, thanks in part to the success of the iPhone 16e. By offering modern features without the flagship price tag, the 16e seems to be carving out space in emerging markets and among users who want a current iPhone experience without the premium cost.
This yearly update cycle for the "e" series reinforces Apple's commitment to keeping its budget lineup fresh-a notable change from the SE's sporadic release history.
