iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max Reportedly Facing Shortage in India, Deliveries May Miss Promised Dates
Apple launched the iPhone 17 series and the new iPhone Air last week at its 'Awe Dropping' event. Pre-orders in India opened on September 12, with deliveries scheduled to begin on September 19. However, not all customers may receive the new models on the promised date.
According to the latest reports, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are likely to face delivery delays, as mainline retailers warn of limited stock across stores. Buyers eyeing the top-end models may have to rely on Apple's own outlets or e-commerce platforms to secure a unit.

Retailer Challenges and Customer Demand
Industry sources say the shortage stems from Apple's rapidly expanded retail network, which now spans 500 cities, cutting down per-store allocation of iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max units. Retailers add that allocations are heavily tilted toward the base models.
In a typical 500-unit delivery, only around 50 are Pro units, and as few as 10 are Pro Max devices, with the high-end 512GB and 1TB models being extremely scarce.
One retailer explained that customers arriving on launch day often seek the Pro or Pro Max models with top-tier storage. Unfortunately, they cannot meet this demand due to insufficient stock. Retailers who accept advance bookings face difficulties fulfilling customer commitments, sometimes attempting to persuade buyers to choose other variants or losing them to Apple's direct channels.
A second retailer mentioned that Apple distributors had promised adequate supply for the September 19 sales, with another batch expected later. However, the initial allocation is 40% lower than last year. Another retailer added, "Distributors are logistics partners. They just do what they are told. There is no clear logic given behind this strategy despite phones getting made in India."
Production and Distribution Insights
Sources familiar with Apple's sales strategy indicate that the supply shortage stems from a demand-supply mismatch rather than any issues between Apple, retailers, or distributors. They confirmed that allocations per retailer have decreased as Apple's channel reach has expanded significantly compared to last year.
"Units per retailer may have reduced because the channel breadth has increased significantly," a source familiar with Apple's channel strategy told Moneycontrol. "Apple's channel now spans across 500 cities in the country, up significantly over last year. This is always a demand-supply issue; it always ramps up. It is a matter of two weeks."
Manufacturing Dynamics
The initial production of iPhone 17 series in India focuses on base models, while ramp-up for Pro models globally occurs a few weeks post-launch based on demand. Sources assure there will be no shortage of iPhone 17 base models.
Foxconn and Tata-run Pegatron are assembling the iPhone 17 Pro, while Wistron in Karnataka and Hosur manufacture the iPhone 17 base model. Foxconn's Sriperumbudur plant is producing the iPhone Air. Much of this output caters to US and European markets while also addressing India's growing demand.
According to Apple's website, customers who ordered the iPhone 17 Pro will receive deliveries between September 27 and October 6. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is listed for an even later window, between October 6 and October 11. Only the iPhone Air is scheduled for delivery on September 19, while the standard iPhone 17 is also shown with the same delivery timeline as the iPhone 17 Pro model.
