Apple’s Upcoming iPhone 17 Series Could Get More Expensive: Will India Pay the Price?
Apple’s next wave of iPhones is just around the corner, and while all eyes are on what’s new in the iPhone 17 series, there’s already a lot of buzz around something a bit less exciting: pricing.
If the latest reports are anything to go by, the upcoming iPhones might get more expensive—at least in the U.S. But the bigger question for Indian buyers is, will those higher prices reach here too?
A New Lineup, A New Price Structure?
This year’s lineup is expected to include four models: the usual iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, and a new entrant—iPhone 17 Air, likely replacing the 16 Plus. Now, according to a note by Jefferies analyst Edison Lee (shared via @DeItaone), Apple could raise prices for the iPhone 17 Pro series due to increased production costs and U.S.-China tariffs.
The rumored pricing? The iPhone 17 Pro might start at $1,049, and the Pro Max could hit $1,249, both about $100 more than last year’s launch prices. Even the iPhone 17 Air might debut at a slightly higher $949, compared to the $899 price tag of the iPhone 16 Plus. The base iPhone 17, however, is still pegged at $799, so no big surprises there—for now.
Why Apple Might Raise Prices
There’s a mix of reasons here. U.S. telecom carriers reportedly saw a 22% year-on-year growth in equipment sales in Q2 2025, but at the same time, Apple’s own production costs have gone up. Add in supply chain complexities and tariff pressures, and it’s not surprising that Apple might shift some of that weight onto the consumer.
That said, Apple tends to take a more nuanced approach when it comes to India.
What Could Happen in India?
In the Indian market, Apple doesn’t follow direct currency conversion. Instead, it adjusts pricing based on import duties, market strategy, and local manufacturing support. Case in point: when the iPhone 16 Pro launched last year, it started at ₹1,19,900—lower than the iPhone 15 Pro’s ₹1,34,900.
If Apple sticks to that trend, even if U.S. pricing goes up, India might not see a dramatic jump—especially with ongoing production at Foxconn and Pegatron plants in India helping buffer some costs.
The base iPhone 17 could continue to retail around ₹79,999, similar to the iPhone 16, making it an attractive upgrade option during the Diwali buying season, especially with bank offers and no-cost EMIs in play.
What’s New in the iPhone 17 Series?
Specs-wise, the iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to pack Apple’s new A19 Pro chip, a redesigned camera module, and possibly a 48MP telephoto camera. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air could feature a 5.5mm thin design, a 6.6-inch 120Hz display, and a single rear 48MP sensor—clearly going for that sleek, minimalist vibe.
The base iPhone 17 is finally expected to get a 120Hz refresh rate display, something buyers have been waiting on for years. All models will ship with iOS 26, featuring a refreshed UI that Apple is calling “Liquid Glass.”
Will Higher Prices Hurt Sales?
Not necessarily. Apple’s appeal in India has always leaned more on aspiration and ecosystem stickiness than raw specs. And while the Pro models may push higher up the pricing ladder, it’s the base iPhone that usually does the heavy lifting in India.
