iPhone 18 Could Get RAM Upgrade to Unlock Full Siri AI Features: Price Won’t be Impacted by Memory Upgrade

Apple could be planning a significant memory upgrade for its next-generation iPhone 18, according to a new supply-chain report from South Korea's KB Securities. The report claims the standard iPhone 18 will feature 12GB of RAM, a move aimed at supporting Apple's most advanced on-device Siri AI capabilities.

The upgrade would mark a major shift for the base iPhone model, especially as Apple increasingly relies on local AI processing for features introduced with iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence.

iPhone 18 Could Get RAM Upgrade Without Price Bump

iPhone 18 RAM Upgrade Could Remove AI Limitations

According to the report, the standard iPhone 18 may jump from 8GB RAM on the current iPhone 17 to 12GB RAM. While RAM upgrades have traditionally benefited multitasking and performance, this increase is expected to play a key role in enabling Apple's latest AI features.

At WWDC 2026, Apple revealed a more advanced on-device Siri model capable of delivering more natural voice interactions and enhanced systemwide dictation. However, these capabilities currently require 12GB of unified memory, limiting them to the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

As a result, the standard iPhone 17 supports Apple Intelligence but misses out on some of the most advanced Siri experiences. If the report proves accurate, the iPhone 18 could eliminate that distinction, allowing buyers of the regular model to access the complete Siri AI feature set without upgrading to a Pro device.

The report also aligns with an earlier claim from Korean publication The Bell, which suggested the iPhone 18 would offer 50 percent more memory than its predecessor. Apple is also said to have asked suppliers to increase LPDDR5X memory production for the next iPhone generation.

Apple May Keep Pricing Unchanged Despite Higher Memory Costs

One of the more notable claims in the report is that Apple may not increase the starting price of the standard iPhone 18 despite the memory upgrade.

KB Securities reportedly expects Apple to continue sourcing memory from Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron at prices higher than the broader market average. Instead of passing those additional costs directly to customers, Apple could absorb them to maintain the current $799 starting price in the US.

Such a move would be particularly important in markets like India, where smartphone pricing remains highly sensitive due to taxes, import duties, and currency fluctuations. A higher-memory iPhone without a corresponding price increase would make the standard model significantly more appealing for long-term buyers.

The strategy would also support Apple's broader AI ambitions. Running more AI tasks directly on the device improves privacy, reduces cloud dependency, and delivers faster responses, but it also requires substantially more memory than previous iPhone generations.

iPhone 18 Launch Timeline (Expected)

The report also sheds light on Apple's expected launch roadmap. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple's first foldable iPhone are reportedly scheduled to debut in late 2026.

Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18, iPhone Air 2, and iPhone 18e are expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. However, Apple has not officially confirmed any launch plans, and the 12GB RAM upgrade remains a supply-chain prediction for now.

If accurate, the change could make AI capabilities a much bigger factor in future iPhone upgrades than traditional performance improvements alone.
