iPhone 18 Pro Buyers May Not Get the One Camera Upgrade Everyone Was Waiting For
If you were holding out for the iPhone 18 Pro because of its rumoured camera upgrades, there is some bad news doing the rounds. The variable aperture camera, easily the most talked about iPhone camera change in years, may end up exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The claim comes from Ice Universe, the Weibo-based tipster with a fairly solid track record on Apple and Samsung leaks. Until now, reports had suggested both Pro models would get the feature, and the camera component was even said to have entered production earlier this year.
The new leak says only the biggest, most expensive iPhone will have it, apparently because the mechanism simply needs more room than the smaller Pro can offer. As the tipster put it, even Apple cannot escape the trade-off where top-tier imaging means living with a brick in your pocket.

What variable aperture actually does
Every iPhone so far has shipped with a fixed aperture, meaning the opening that lets light hit the sensor never changes. A variable aperture can widen for low light and natural background blur, or narrow down for sharper landscape shots where you want everything in focus. It is the kind of control you normally get on a proper camera, and phones like Huawei's flagships have offered it for a while. The catch is that the moving parts eat up internal space, which is exactly where the smaller Pro seems to have lost out. The 18 Pro Max is expected to grow slightly this year to fit a bigger battery, and that extra room may be doing double duty.
Apple has pulled this move before
There is a clear precedent here. In 2023, the iPhone 15 Pro Max got the 5x tetraprism zoom lens while the regular 15 Pro stayed at 3x, and the smaller model only caught up a year later with the iPhone 16 Pro. If history repeats, iPhone 18 Pro buyers may get variable aperture in 2027, a full year late.
For Indian buyers, this matters because the Pro Max already commands a premium of around Rs 15,000 to 20,000 over the Pro, and Apple keeps finding new reasons to justify that gap. If the camera is the reason you buy a Pro iPhone, the decision this September just got more expensive.
None of this is official yet, and Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 lineup in September 2026.
