Jealous of the iPhone 14’s Satellite Connectivity Feature? Motorola Got You Covered
Motorola has recently released the Motorola Defy Satellite Link, a compact device that functions as a satellite messaging hotspot. This device allows users to send text messages via satellite connectivity. Priced at $150, it is compatible with both Android and iOS devices and is currently available for purchase in the United States.
Distinguishing Features from the iPhone 14
While satellite messaging gained attention with the introduction of the iPhone 14, the Motorola Defy Satellite Link offers distinct advantages. Unlike the iPhone 14, which is primarily focused on emergency situations and sends predefined SOS messages to emergency services, the Motorola hotspot goes beyond emergency usage.

It provides users with the ability to engage in full-fledged messaging, enabling them to compose and send messages to anyone through a satellite connection, rather than relying solely on cellular networks.
Important Considerations
It is important to note that satellite messaging does not provide the same instantaneous connectivity as traditional cellular networks. Establishing a satellite connection and sending a message typically takes around 10 seconds, as stated by Bullitt, the company behind the satellite connectivity service. While it may not offer the same speed as regular messaging apps, satellite connectivity ensures reliable communication in areas with limited or no cellular coverage.
Utilizing Inmarsat Satellites
The Motorola Defy Satellite Link utilizes the Inmarsat satellite network, which has been in operation since the 1970s. Inmarsat currently operates 14 satellites in space. According to the product's sales page on REI, the coverage provided by the Motorola Defy Satellite Link is intended to encompass the continental United States and Europe.

Furthermore, the company plans to expand coverage to include Canada and Alaska by September 2023. Within the designated coverage areas, the service extends up to 75 miles offshore, ensuring connectivity even in remote regions.
Specifications
In terms of specifications, the compact Bluetooth device comes with a 600mAh battery that reportedly offers up to four days of usage. It relies on the MediaTek MT6825 satellite connectivity chip, which is designed to utilize the new 3GPP NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) standard, ensuring seamless connectivity.
The device boasts an IP68 rating, indicating its waterproof capability of up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes, making it suitable for outdoor activities. Additionally, it includes GPS for location tracking and side buttons for quick check-ins or emergency calls.
Availability
Despite the information provided on Motorola's website, which indicates that the device is currently available for pre-order, a press release obtained by Arstechnica affirms that the Motorola Defy Satellite Link is indeed available for purchase.
