LG G7 will not feature an OLED display to cut costs: Report

Well, this news may disappoint some LG fans, as the LG G7 was expected to sport an OLED display. Moreover, rumors have it, the smartphone will carry a price tag higher than $800 (approximately over Rs. 52,000). So we can't see a good reason why will the G7 not ship with an OLED display. In any case, let's look into the new report.

Why this decision?

Why this decision?

The South Korean manufacturer has reportedly taken this decision as a cost cutting measure. Presumably, the LG G7 will come equipped with LG Display's MLCD+ panel, which is claimed to consume 35 percent less power than a standard LCD display, without impacting the brightness. However, this move may affect the sales of G7 and backfire LG as most big OEMs these days prefer using OLED panels.

Is LG taking a step back?

Even last year's LG V30 was launched with an OLED display. So it seems like instead of moving forward, LG is taking a step back. Of course, the authenticity of this report is yet to be confirmed and we have heard no official word on this matter. However, according to previous reports, the LG G7 will come with a 6.1-inch OLED display with the aspect ratio of 18:9.

Apple to follow suit?

Apple to follow suit?

The Korea Herald claims that LG's mobile unit faced loss for the 11th consecutive quarter in Q4 2017. So the company is trying to reduce costs by using an LCD panel instead of an OLED one. For those who are not aware, OLED panels cost almost twice as much as LCD panels.

Not only LG, Apple is also likely to follow suit. The Cupertino-giant is expected a new LCD phone in the fall, which will come with a cheaper price tag than usual. However, two iPhones models with OLED displays will be launched as well.
