Made In India Smartphone Production Sees 6% Growth In 2024 Driven By Apple And Samsung Exports

The production of 'Made in India' smartphones saw a 6% increase in 2024, driven by Apple and Samsung's rising exports, as per Counterpoint's 'Make in India’ Service report. These two brands accounted for 94% of India's smartphone exports. Their manufacturing expansion aligns with India's strategy to lessen import reliance and strengthen its global supply chain presence.

The Indian government's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been pivotal in this growth. It encourages global manufacturers to establish or expand their facilities in India, enhancing local manufacturing capabilities. This initiative has significantly contributed to the country's electronics manufacturing sector.

Performance of Key Manufacturers

Samsung maintained its dominance in India's electronics manufacturing, achieving a 7% year-on-year growth due to increased exports. Research Analyst Tanvi Sharma highlighted this growth as a key factor in Samsung's continued success in the region.

vivo captured 14% of the shipment share with a similar year-on-year growth rate. Its success is attributed to an expanded offline retail network and stronger distribution presence. According to Counterpoint's shipment tracker, vivo led India's smartphone shipments in 2024.

Foxconn Hon Hai, supported by Apple, experienced a 19% rise in manufacturing volumes. The company plans to boost local production by setting up a smartphone display module assembly, further strengthening its position in the market.

OPPO faced challenges, slipping to fourth place among manufacturers with a 34% decline in shipments year-on-year. This drop resulted from intense competition and an increasing share of contract manufacturing for OPPO and realme.

Emerging Players and Market Dynamics

DBG achieved notable double-digit growth in 2024 through expanded partnerships with Xiaomi and realme. Meanwhile, Tata Electronics recorded an impressive 107% year-on-year growth, becoming the fastest-growing manufacturer of the year. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models significantly contributed to Tata's volume growth.

Tata Electronics also broadened its assembly operations and ventured into semiconductor fabrication with a new plant in Dholera, Gujarat. Plans for an OSAT facility in Assam were announced as well, positioning Tata as a key player globally.

Dixon emerged as the leading manufacturer in the overall mobile handset segment, which includes smartphones and feature phones. Strong shipments from Transsion brands and Motorola drove its performance. In the smartphone segment alone, Dixon reported a 39% year-on-year growth due to partnerships with Transsion brands and realme.

Future Outlook

Senior Research Analyst Prachir Singh commented on market trends, noting that major global smartphone manufacturers are diversifying production to ensure resilient supply chains and mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on one country. He identified India as an attractive manufacturing destination due to its large market size, affordable labour costs, and supportive government policies.

Singh added that smartphone production in India is expected to grow at double-digit rates in 2025 with increased local value addition. This positive outlook reflects India's potential as a significant player in the global electronics industry.
