MediaTek Dimensity 6400 Chipset Announced, Offering Minor Gains Over its Predecessor
MediaTek's latest offering, the Dimensity 6400 chipset, is a modest update over its predecessor, the Dimensity 6300. This new chipset is essentially a refined version of the 6300, which itself was an enhancement of the 6100+ from earlier in 2023. The lineage of this chip can be traced back even further, showcasing its enduring design.
The Dimensity 6400 is manufactured using TSMC's 6nm process and features an octa-core CPU configuration. It includes two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.5GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 2.0GHz. Additionally, it incorporates an ARM Mali-G57 MC2 GPU for graphics processing.

Specifications and Features
This chipset supports LPDDR4X RAM with speeds up to 2,133MHz and UFS 2.2 storage technology. It can handle displays with resolutions up to 1080p+ at a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and supports 10-bit colour depth. The integrated ISP can manage cameras with resolutions as high as 108MP, although details on video resolution remain unspecified.
The Dimensity 6400 also includes a Release 16 modem capable of achieving peak downlink speeds of up to 3.3Gbps. Connectivity options include support for Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5.2, ensuring compatibility with modern wireless standards.
Comparative Analysis
When compared to its predecessor, the Dimensity 6300, the primary difference lies in a slight increase in clock speed for the A76 cores by 0.1GHz. The GPU may also have received a similar boost, though MediaTek has not provided specific details on this aspect.
Interestingly, the architecture of the Dimensity 6400 bears resemblance to older designs like the Dimensity 810 from 2021. Both chips share the same CPU and GPU configurations and are built on a similar process node. However, the newer chipset offers enhanced capabilities such as support for higher camera resolutions and faster modem speeds.
Upcoming Devices
The Realme P3x 5G is set to be one of the first devices powered by this new chipset. Scheduled for unveiling soon, it promises to bring fresh designs while leveraging the capabilities of the Dimensity 6400.
Despite its roots in older technology, the Dimensity 6400 remains relevant due to its balanced performance and modern features. It continues to serve as a reliable choice for manufacturers looking to offer competitive mid-range devices with advanced connectivity options.
