Google is expected to announce the Android 9 OS on the Google I/O 2018, which starts on the 8th of May 2018. Google released the beta version of the Android 9 for the selected devices (Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, and the Pixel 2 XL) and now a third-party developer has officially ported the ROM for the Moto Z smartphone.

Moto Z gets support for the Android 9

The Moto Z is the first non-Google smartphone to support Android 9. However, as this is a third party ROM, one has to unlock the bootloader to manually flash the latest software from Google. As this is not an official ROM, it is not advised to flash it on your daily driver and make sure to backup all of the content stored on the device for a safer side.

How to install Android 9 on the Moto Z?

To install the Android 9 on the Moto Z smartphone, unlock the bootloader and then install a custom recovery like the Clock Work Mode (CWM) or the Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP). Download the ZIP file from the below-mentioned link and flash it using either of these recovery options. Set it up like any of the Android smartphones and you have successfully installed Android 9 OS on your Moto Z smartphone.

Do not try to install this software on any other smartphone, even though it has a similar hardware configuration, as a wrong patch of OS can brick the smartphone in the kernel level.

What is not working?

Here is the list of features, which are not working on Moto Z running on the custom build of Android 9 OS. According to the developer, the flashlight, secondary SIM card slot and the Moto MOD battery is not working. The developer of the ROM is confident enough to solve these issues in the future via software update.

Whats new on Android 9?

Android 9 is the upcoming mobile OS from Google, which is expected to offer UI improvements and a design overhaul. Additionally, starting with the Android 9, the OS will support the smartphones with a display notch, which will help the developers to update their apps with the latest trend.
