Motorola has filed a patent for a foldable smartphone. The device can transform into a tablet when extended. According to the findings at the World Intellectual Property Organization, the hinge would sport a similar design as seen on the Lenovo Yoga Android tablet.

The patent was awarded back in March this year. The patent hints a similar design of a foldable smartphone, a concept shown by Lenovo couple of years ago. The device will have the same ability to unfold into a tablet.

The drawings show that the device will comprise of three parts. The smartphone will most likely feature a versatile build making it possible to use it in phone mode and tablet mode. The third configuration will be where the screen could be propped up almost like it had a kickstand, ideal for watching videos.

Apart from the design, the device will have wireless charging support. What's more interesting is the integration of 3D stereoscopic image capture. It works when the phone is in an unfolded state using both front and rear camera simultaneously.

However, this wouldn't be the first device to include 3D image capture as the LG G Slate had two cameras on the back. Sadly, the feature didn't really take off with the users, so it was offered with a lot of devices.

Though the company hasn't confirmed the existence of any such device, it is possible that Motorola is advancing the development of this device.

Many major OEMs are working on their versions of the foldable smartphone. Samsung also won a patent for an "Electronic Device Having Flexible Display," but this is a tad different from the previous patents. The new patent filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) under publication number 20180103132, is more than a smartphone. It seems to be something that can double as a tablet, smartphone or a smart wearable.

What's more interesting is that it's designed around a device that can surpass far beyond these use cases. The company describes the patent as a single device that will have large flexible display comprised of three bodies. The first and third will be thicker compared to the middle portion, allowing for rotation and folding.
