MWC 2024: Qualcomm Unveils AI Hub, Snapdragon X80 5G Modem, & FastConnect 7900 Tech
Qualcomm has introduced new developments in generative AI and connectivity at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona. Among the key announcements are the Qualcomm AI Hub, Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System, and the FastConnect 7900 connectivity system.
Qualcomm AI Hub: Elevating On-Device AI Implementation
Generative AI has witnessed significant growth, particularly in on-device applications. Qualcomm aims to facilitate developers in this realm with the Qualcomm AI Hub. This innovative hub comprises over 75 AI models, including Whisper, ControlNet, Stable Diffusion, and Baichuan 7B, all optimized for Qualcomm and Snapdragon platforms.

Implementation Ease
Qualcomm assures developers that integrating on-device AI models into their applications is now more convenient and efficient with the AI Hub. The chipmaker claims that this can be achieved with just "a few lines of code" on cloud-hosted devices, promising superior on-device AI performance with minimal memory utilization and power consumption.
Availability and Future Developments
The AI models are currently accessible on Qualcomm AI Hub, Github, and Hugging Face. Qualcomm plans to continually expand its offerings by adding new AI models and extending support for additional platforms and operating systems. The company's AI Research division is showcasing the Large Language and Vision Assistant (LLaVA) on an Android phone, demonstrating the capabilities of the Qualcomm AI Hub.

Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System
Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System took center stage as the latest and most powerful 5G modem for smartphones. Distinguishing itself as the world's first 5G modem with fully integrated NB-NTN satellite communications support, it eliminates the need for a dedicated chip for satellite connectivity.
Advanced Architecture
The modem features a six-antenna architecture, 6X carrier aggregation for sub-6GHz bands, and AI-powered mmWave range extension. The dedicated tensor accelerator enhances throughput, latency, coverage, power efficiency, quality of service, and mmWave beam management.

Performance Metrics
Qualcomm asserts that the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System achieves a peak download speed of 10Gbps and a peak upload speed of 3.5Gbps. Commercial devices equipped with this advanced 5G modem are anticipated to hit the market in the second half of 2024.
FastConnect 7900
Qualcomm also introduced the FastConnect 7900, a mobile connectivity system that seamlessly integrates Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, and Ultra Wideband (UWB) technologies on a single 6nm chip. This system is recognized as the world's first to achieve this level of integration.

AI-Powered Connectivity
Aligned with Qualcomm's MWC theme, the FastConnect 7900 is AI-powered, adapting to various scenarios and environments to provide superior connectivity. It incorporates technologies such as Wi-Fi Ranging, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and UWB for enhanced proximity awareness.
Compatibility and Power Efficiency
FastConnect 7900 supports Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, and Wi-Fi 7 with a peak speed of 5.8Gbps. Compatible with Bluetooth 5.4, Qualcomm aptX audio, spatial audio, and ANT+, it is expected to consume 40% less power. The commercial launch of FastConnect 7900 is scheduled for the second half of 2024.
