New iPhone SE to Feature 6.1-Inch OLED Display and Apple’s 5G Chip: Report
Earlier this year, reputed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple had canceled its plans for the iPhone SE. Kuo has now reported that Apple has revived the iPhone SE, adding that the device will sport a 6.1-inch OLED display and Apple's 5G modem.
To compare, last year's SE model features an antiquated LCD screen with a small display size of 4.7 inches. Apple usually launches a new iPhone SE once every two years, so we can expect the upcoming model to arrive in 2024.
iPhone SE 4: Rumored Features
Kuo took to Twitter to share his latest findings about the new iPhone SE, hinting that it could sport a new design. The iPhone SE will get a 6.1-inch screen with thinner bezels and a modern LCD. Essentially, it will resemble the iPhone 14.
Last month, Kuo reported that Apple had ditched the idea of launching a new iPhone SE due to proprietary issues around its 5G modem. However, the company appears to have resolved the problem and will test the chipset with the new iPhone SE.
Apple's new in-house 5G chip will be manufactured on a 4nm process. It will reportedly only support sub-6GHz 5G bands. Meanwhile, the iPhone SE 2022 features Qualcomm's Snapdragon X57 chip.
Kuo states that Apple could ditch Qualcomm's baseband chips for the iPad and Apple Watch if the mass production of the new iPhone SE goes to plan in the first half of 2024.
With Apple trying to reduce its dependence on third-party manufacturers, Kuo predicts that Qualcomm's business might "decline significantly in the next 2-3 years."
While the Apple analyst didn't share the launch timeline for the new iPhone SE, we can expect it to arrive after March 2024. To recall, last year's iPhone SE debuted in March 2022.
