No iPhone 18? Apple To Mark iPhone's 20th Anniversary with Launch of iPhone 20 in First Half of 2027: Report
Apple is reportedly considering skipping the base model for its iPhone 18 series. This move is believed to be in preparation for an earlier release of the 20th anniversary iPhone, as per senior analyst Heo Moo-yeol. The tech giant aims to launch the iPhone 20 series in 2027, bypassing the number 19 altogether.
iPhone Launch Strategy
According to Korean outlet ETNews, Heo Moo-yeol revealed that Apple plans to introduce the base iPhone 20 alongside the iPhone 18e in early 2027. Previously, it was expected that the base iPhone 18 would debut with the 18e. However, next year's September event will feature the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, Air 2, and potentially the iPhone fold, though its release might face delays.

This decision marks a significant shift for Apple as it would be the first time they skip a base model. The change allows for an earlier unveiling of their anniversary edition. The remaining models of the iPhone 20 series, along with new Air and fold devices, are anticipated to launch in September.
Impact on Shipments
If Apple decides against releasing a base iPhone 18, it could face a notable drop in shipments. The base model is typically more affordable than other versions and appeals to users seeking an entry-level device without premium features. Heo Moo-yeol estimates this could result in a decrease of about 20 million units.
The current iPhone 17 series is projected to achieve around 245 million shipments. Despite this potential decline, Heo Moo-yeol remains optimistic about Apple's recovery prospects. "If the launch of the foldable iPhone in 2027 and Apple's strategy of launching twice a year take hold, it will recover to above 250 million units per year," he stated.
Anniversary Celebrations
The motivation behind skipping the iPhone 18 lies in Apple's desire to commemorate two decades since its original device's debut in 2007. Initially thought to be part of their September event lineup in 2027, advancing the release of their anniversary model provides a unique opportunity for celebration.
This strategic move reflects Apple's commitment to innovation and maintaining consumer interest by offering new products at different times throughout the year. By doing so, they aim not only to capture market attention but also ensure sustained growth despite temporary setbacks.
