Nokia making profit in the Indian market, says HMD Global

Nokia has become profitable again in the Indian handset business in just over a year or relaunching its phone.

"We are already profitable in India," Amit Goyal, the global business head( north & east) of HMD GLobal, which is the global licensee of Nokia brand, quoted by PTI.

 

However, he didn't elaborate his statement further neither he has disclosed the number of the handsets, which HMD Global has shipped top India. He didn't even talk about the distribution of Nokia phones which is handled by the company's affiliated organisation TNS Mobile India.

HMD Global is a Finland based company who has taken the licensee of Nokia brand for a 10-year period. So whatever phone which is launching under the brand name of Nokia are manufactured by the HMD Globals, in case if you don't know.

According to Goyal, the company has sold 70 million units in 2017 globally. Out of which feature phones has contributed a major share. The company is planning to focus on this segment more because 50 percent of the domestic market is ruled by the feature phone segment.

So far, Nokia has five feature phone and eight Android smartphone models which have been either launched or ready to be launch in upcoming day. The launch of more models will strengthen the foothold of Nokia in India, which come under the top three markets globally.

"We want to be present in all the segments of the phone market. The future rollouts will also cater to diverse segments," he said. He further added that Nokia wants to be one of the top three handset manufacturers not only in India but also in international markets.

Goyal said that creating an infrastructure of 550 distributors who have successfully served over a lack retail point in short notice was an exciting journey.
