Nothing OS 5.0 Update Based on Android 17 Rolls Out for Phone 3: What's New and How to Download

Nothing has started rolling out Nothing OS 5.0, its latest major software update, to the Nothing Phone (3). Based on Android 17, the update introduces more than 80 changes spanning interface design, personalisation, AI-powered tools and system performance. The stable rollout follows the company's announcement in August and the subsequent Open Beta testing phase.

Nothing OS 5.0 Rollout: How to Check for the Update

The stable update is being distributed over the air in phases, meaning it may take time to reach all eligible devices. Nothing Phone (3) users can check for the update by navigating to Settings > System > System Update.

Availability may vary by region and device, with the rollout expanding gradually. Nothing has also indicated that other Nothing and CMF smartphones are scheduled to receive the update in the coming months.

Nothing OS 5.0 Features: Redesigned Home Screen and Lock Screen

Nothing OS 5.0 brings a visual refresh, starting with the home screen. The update adds transparent design accents to system widgets and the search bar, alongside an adaptive colour system that samples tones from the wallpaper and applies them across the interface.

The lock screen gains a new Micrographics clock face, which brings the date, time, weather and upcoming calendar events into a single glanceable layout.

Other interface refinements include the Geist typeface, updated icons, improved spacing and smoother animations across the status bar, Settings, Camera and Gallery apps. The changes aim to deliver a more consistent experience throughout the operating system.

Nothing OS 5.0 Adds New AI Features to Essential Space

Nothing is expanding its AI-focused Essential Space platform with several new tools. Essential Voice promises faster, cleaner speech transcription, while Smart Collections helps organise saved content.

Another addition is Essential Apps Builder, an on-device tool that lets users create small AI-powered applications using natural-language prompts. These mini-apps are intended for specific personal tasks rather than full-scale software development.

Nothing says some Essential Space improvements and features will also arrive through Google Play, separate from the operating system update.

Nothing OS 5.0 Performance Improvements and Android 17 Features

The update introduces improvements to background memory retention, touch response and resource usage. Users can also expect smoother transitions during multitasking, app switching and folder interactions.

Since Nothing OS 5.0 is based on Android 17, it also brings platform-level changes, including separate Notification and Quick Settings panels, cross-platform Quick Share, updated privacy dashboards and a revised Recents screen.

Which Nothing Phones Will Get Nothing OS 5.0?

The Nothing Phone (3) is the first device receiving the stable Nothing OS 5.0 update. Other compatible Nothing and CMF smartphones are expected to follow in the coming months, although availability will depend on the device and rollout schedule.

Users should look for the official over-the-air notification or check the System Update section in Settings. As with other phased software releases, the update may not appear on every eligible device immediately.
