Nothing Phone 3 Demo Units Reportedly Used Stock Photos; Company Responds

The smartphone industry is no stranger to bold marketing strategies, but these can sometimes backfire. Brands have been caught exaggerating claims, from staged camera demos to AI-enhanced photos. Recently, Nothing faced criticism for allegedly using stock images instead of real camera samples in its Phone 3 demo units.

In New Zealand, a viral screen recording from a Nothing Phone 3 demo unit (spotted by Android Authority) revealed five photos under the tagline: "Here's what our community has captured with the Phone (3)." This message implied that the images were taken using the phone's camera. However, none of them were actually shot on the Phone 3.

Nothing Phone 3 Demo Units Reportedly Used Stock Photos

Stock Photos Identified

One of the photographers behind these shots told Android Authority that all five images - the window, the glass, the headlight, the staircase, and the woman – are available for licensing on the stock photo marketplace Stills.

Roman Fox, who took the headlight photo, confirmed to the publication it was captured with a Fujifilm XH2s camera in Paris in 2023, months before the Phone 3's release. The image had been shared on his Instagram well before Nothing's campaign.

Although Nothing legally licensed these photos, displaying them as Phone 3 camera samples was misleading. Shoppers would naturally assume they were taken with the device itself.

Company's Response

When questioned about this issue, Nothing did not deny the allegations. Instead, they acknowledged their mistake and released a brief statement: "Accuracy in how we represent our product capabilities is important to us. Phone (3) demo units are being updated to feature only images captured with Phone (3)."

Nothing's Co-founder Akis Evangelidis also clarified that demo units (LDUs) are first loaded with placeholder images months before launch, which are later replaced with real camera samples. Some units mistakenly retained stock photos, and the company is fixing this while working with their promoters to ensure all LDUs reflect the latest version. He stressed it was an oversight, no ill intent.

Evangelidis added that Nothing has always promoted transparency by showcasing community photos rather than relying on paid professional photographers, including for the Phone (3). He noted that customers visiting stores could still test the camera directly on demo units.

Impact on Brand Image

This incident could harm Nothing's reputation as a brand built on transparency and community engagement. Misleading marketing about camera capabilities has long frustrated smartphone users. In today's market, where buyers scrutinise every detail, authenticity is crucial.

If Nothing aims to maintain its image as an innovative and reliable brand, ensuring genuine product showcases will be essential going forward.
