Nothing Responds to Backlash: Phone 3a Lite to Let Users Remove Meta Services
Nothing's promise of clean software recently took a hit, but the company is now taking steps to fix it. The Phone 3a Lite became Nothing's first device to ship with bloatware out of the box, sparking frustration among fans who expected a pure, minimalist Android experience.
Following heavy community backlash, the company has officially announced that users will soon be able to completely remove all Meta-related services from their devices.

Nothing to Roll Out Update Letting Users Delete Meta Services
Nothing's co-founder Akis Evangelidis confirmed in a community post that an upcoming update will allow full uninstallation of Meta App Installer, Meta App Manager, and Meta Services - components that previously could only be disabled.
The update is expected to roll out later this month, restoring some of the user control that helped Nothing build its reputation in the first place.
However, the company hasn't yet commented on another controversial addition - Lock Glimpse, a feature that automatically rotates lock-screen wallpapers and pushes links or articles users never opted into. While it can be turned off, it remains enabled by default, which has raised usability and privacy concerns among early buyers.
Why the Bloatware Was There: Nothing's Explanation
Nothing claims the inclusion of preinstalled apps like TikTok (in select regions), Instagram, and Facebook was meant to enhance user experience - not clutter it. According to the company, pre-loading these apps improves overall performance, offering:
- Faster app launches (by up to 50-100ms)
- Better background retention (no reloads when switching back)
- Reduced battery consumption
- Smoother in-app camera functionality
The company says the Meta service layer was originally designed to keep these apps updated and stable. Still, with the upcoming option to uninstall them entirely, users will once again have full control over their phones' software.
New App Recommendation Service Coming to Nothing OS
In addition to the Meta uninstallation update, Nothing also revealed plans for a new "app recommendation service." This feature will appear during device setup, suggesting a curated list of popular apps to help new users get started faster.
Crucially, this service is optional - users can skip or disable it anytime through system settings, ensuring that the setup experience remains flexible and privacy-conscious.
A Step Toward Transparency
While the Phone 3a Lite's debut was marred by criticism over unexpected bloatware, Nothing's quick response and willingness to restore user choice may help rebuild trust among its community. The upcoming update marks a positive move for the company's long-standing philosophy of clean software and transparency - values that defined its early success.
