Oppo, Vivo and OnePlus belong to the same parent company BBK Electronics. Two of these companies, Oppo and Vivo recently embraced the display notch with the Oppo R15, Oppo F7, Vivo X21 and Vivo V9 smartphones. Now, it looks like OnePlus 6 will also sport a notch at the top of the display. And, there is an official confirmation from the company regarding the notch, which was popularized by Apple iPhone X.
OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei had revealed an image of their upcoming flagship smartphone. The image shows a part of the device and gives us an idea of how the notch will look like. Also, the exact dimensions of the smartphone's notch have also been revealed. Pei made the revelations in an interview with The Verge and also detailed why they opted to embrace the display notch. He has also detailed the UI changes those were implemented due to the notch.
Pei said that OnePlus 6 will feature a notch, which measures somewhere between the notches seen on the iPhone X and Essential Phone. When it comes to the components intended to be squeezed into this space, there will be a selfie camera sensor, ambient light sensor, LED notification light, and earpiece. Pei said that they will not need a notch that is as large as the one on iPhone X as the OnePlus 6 will not feature the hardware-based Face ID technology for facial recognition. The notch will measure 19.616 x 7.687 mm.
He had further revealed that OnePlus had manually tested 1,000 popular Android apps to see how the apps react to the notch and assess what kind of compatibility the company needs to engineer. The OnePlus 6 will move the clock to the left of the screen and provide more space for the rest of the status icons. Pei also revealed that the smartphone can hide the notch during full-screen video playback.
OnePlus 6 is said to be house the largest display seen in a OnePlus device so far with a high screen-to-body ratio of 90%. However, it will not be larger than the existing OnePlus smartphones in size. Contradictory to the earlier reports, Pei said that the OnePlus 6 will not be identical to the Oppo R15.
Yesterday, we came across a tweet posted by popular tipster Evan Blass on his Twitter handle showing the OnePlus 6 with a wooden back panel. The image revealed the squarish fingerprint sensor at the rear and a vertically aligned dual-camera setup along with LED flash. Also, there appears to be a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom of the phone.
