OnePlus Goes the iPhone Route, Ditching the Iconic Alert Slider for a Customizable Button

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau recently addressed a notable change to the brand's well-known Alert Slider feature. The company plans to replace this traditional component with a new, customisable button. This decision follows a report from last month and aims to enhance functionality and adaptability. The Alert Slider has been a key feature of OnePlus devices and even some OPPO products.

The Alert Slider was praised for its simplicity in switching sound profiles. However, its fixed hardware design limited further customisation. Pete Lau expressed his desire to expand the feature's capabilities beyond simple sound profile switching. "As much as I love the Alert Slider, I kept asking myself the same question. How can it do more?" he stated.

Feedback and Development

The decision to move away from the Alert Slider was carefully considered. Feedback after the OnePlus 10T launch, which lacked the slider, showed users' strong emotional connection to it. This feedback led to three years of internal discussion and development within the company.

The main limitation of the Alert Slider was its hardware-locked functionality. Its physical positions restricted any potential for software-based customisation. To address this issue, OnePlus decided on a new, customisable button that offers greater flexibility.

New Customisable Button

"The Solution? A Smarter, Customisable Button," explained the post, highlighting a shift towards a more personalised user experience. This new button is designed to adapt to individual user needs, offering a broader range of functionalities while maintaining essential features like quickly switching sound profiles.

OnePlus reassured users that crucial features would remain intact with the new button design. The company stated that maintaining quick sound profile switching is a "non-negotiable" aspect of this redesign.

User Engagement and Future Prospects

The announcement emphasised OnePlus's commitment to user feedback by inviting community members to share ideas for the new button's functionality. The company described this change as an "evolution" of the Alert Slider, aiming to retain its core convenience while unlocking new possibilities.

This shift is seen as an opportunity to better utilise device space, enable innovative design layouts, and improve overall structural performance. While acknowledging the emotional significance of the Alert Slider for its community, OnePlus expressed confidence that this new button represents progress in delivering a more versatile smartphone experience.
