Foldable smartphones seem to be an upcoming trend in the mobile world. With handset manufacturers now filing patents for foldable smartphones it further looks like the race to manufacturing such smartphones is getting intense. ZTE has seemingly come up with Axon M which we can say is a valiant attempt to actually come with such commercial device. While Axon M has been promoted as a foldable smartphone its screen consists of two separate displays that are connected via a hinge. However, foldable smartphones as we say is supposed to come with one display possibly with a flexible screen.

Several manufacturers like Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, LG and Huawei amongst others are reportedly working on such smartphones. So it will be interesting to see who will come up with a true foldable smartphone in the coming days.

Having said that, a new leak now suggests that Oppo is also joining the bandwagon. The Chinese handset maker has patented its own foldable smartphone. While it sounds interesting, the patent images show sketches of the alleged smartphone with a single flexible display.

On further analyzing the images it looks like Oppo has envisioned this device like a book and the device folds inwards and it kind of looks like a phone with a one-sided curved display. However unlike the Axon M, when the phone is stretched fully, a single large display appears without any cut in between.

In the folded mode, the front-facing camera and sensors are on the left side of the top bezel while the earpiece is on the right side of the top bezel. As for the purpose of the foldable screen, it looks like one of the sides can be used for making calls, while the other can be used for taking selfies. Oppo could also be aiming to provide a good visual experience with such smartphone.

Coming to the back, it seems that it has two different parts. On one side, there are vertically arranged dual cameras and on the other side is a cut-out with the same shape as the cameras. This is basically to allow the camera to fit into the cutout when the phone is folded.

Other images reveal that the phone's overall body has a uniform thickness when stretched fully.

In any case, these are just patent filings and we don't know when Oppo will actually be releasing such products in the market. Experts believe that it will take more time before the technology is fully perfected and that the devices will start hitting the shelves.
