Pixel 11 Series Price Hike Confirmed Amid RAM Crisis: Google Aims to Make Android More Memory Efficient

Google has confirmed that the upcoming Pixel 11 series will launch with higher prices due to a global surge in RAM costs. The announcement comes ahead of the company's Made by Google event on August 12, where the Pixel 11 lineup is expected to debut.

The company also revealed that it is working on making Android significantly more RAM-efficient, helping offset rising component costs without compromising performance.

Global RAM Prices Force Pixel 11 Price Increase

Speaking about the company's hardware roadmap, Google's Vice President of Hardware, Shakil Barkat, said memory prices have increased dramatically over the past few quarters.

According to Barkat, the cost of 1GB of RAM has jumped from under $3 to nearly $12, making it difficult for Google to absorb the additional manufacturing costs. As a result, the company has confirmed that retail prices for future Pixel devices will increase.

This backs recent leaks suggesting the Pixel 11 lineup will see a price hike compared to its predecessor.

Pixel 11 Could Get More Storage, But Not Across the Board

Google is expected to increase the base storage on select Pixel 11 models to 256GB, partially offsetting the higher asking price.

However, the same may not apply to premium variants. The Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Fold are tipped to receive direct price increases without additional storage benefits. Google has yet to confirm the final pricing or storage configurations.

Lower RAM, Smarter Software

The memory shortage is also expected to influence hardware specifications.

Recent reports suggest the Pixel 11 Pro could launch with 12GB of RAM, despite earlier plans for a 16GB configuration. Rather than relying on more hardware, Google says it is investing in software optimisation.

The company has launched a dedicated effort to make Android consume less RAM, while also encouraging app developers to optimise memory usage. Combined with the Tensor chipset, Google believes these improvements will allow Pixel devices to deliver flagship performance even with lower memory configurations.

Google also says its on-device AI models are being redesigned to execute machine-learning tasks more efficiently, reducing their dependence on large amounts of RAM.

Existing Pixel Phones Could Also Cost More

The pricing changes may not be limited to the Pixel 11 series.

Google indicated that current-generation Pixel devices could also see retail price revisions as inventory is replenished at higher manufacturing costs. This could affect devices such as the Pixel 10a, making existing stock a better value before revised pricing comes into effect.
