Privacy Focused Jolla Phone Launched with Sailfish OS, MediaTek Chip, 5500mAh Battery

Jolla has returned to the smartphone market with the new Jolla Phone, a privacy-focused Sailfish OS device. The company is targeting users who want an Android-compatible phone without heavy tracking. The crowdfunding-style pre-order campaign has already passed its minimum production target, so manufacturing is now expected to go ahead.

The Jolla Phone is available to pre-order with a €99 (about USD 115 or Rs. 10,409) down payment. The full pre-order price is €499 (around USD 581 or Rs. 52,465), while the normal retail price is expected between €599 and €699. Production was conditional on support for at least 2,000 units by 23:55 on 4 January 2026, Helsinki time, a target already exceeded.

At the time of writing, supporters have ordered 2,515 Jolla Phone units, reaching 125% of the funding goal with 27 days still left. Early backers are promised a special edition back cover. Deliveries are planned by the end of the first half of 2026, first in the UK, Norway, Switzerland and European Union countries, with later expansion to other regions under consideration.

The Jolla Phone keeps a familiar silhouette from the 2013 model, including a replaceable back cover. It is offered in three colours inspired by Nordic landscapes: Snow White, Kaamos Black and The Orange. Jolla describes the device as an "independent European Do It Together (DIT) Linux phone", signalling a community-involved approach and European privacy focus.

Jolla Phone hardware, cameras and battery

The smartphone uses a 6.36-inch Full HD AMOLED display, with about 390 pixels per inch and Gorilla Glass protection. Power comes from an unspecified MediaTek 5G system-on-chip paired with 12GB RAM. Storage is 256GB, and users can expand it via microSDXC cards up to 2TB. The battery is rated at 5,500 mAh and is user-replaceable, which is rare in modern phones.

On the rear, the Jolla Phone carries a 50MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide camera. The company has not yet disclosed the resolution of the front-facing camera. A side-mounted fingerprint scanner handles biometric security, while an RGB notification LED offers visual alerts. The body measures roughly 158 x 74 x 9 mm, balancing battery size with a still-manageable profile.

The Jolla Phone runs Sailfish OS 5, which is governed by European privacy principles and promises at least five years of software support. Jolla says the operating system has no tracking or analytics built in. A physical Privacy Switch on the phone allows users to cut off the microphone, camera, Bluetooth, or even Android app support when required, adding a hardware-backed privacy layer.

Jolla Phone connectivity, Sailfish OS features and specs

Android software compatibility comes through Jolla AppSupport, which lets users run many Android apps while keeping Sailfish OS as the main system. Users can disable Android components if they prefer a pure Sailfish experience. Connectivity options include 5G, dual nano-SIM support with 4G, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and NFC, covering most current network and payment needs.

With its focus on user control, a physical Privacy Switch, and long-term Sailfish OS support, the Jolla Phone is aimed at people who value data protection over aggressive hardware marketing. Strong early backing suggests there is still interest in alternative mobile platforms, and Indian buyers watching privacy debates may also track how widely Jolla expands sales outside Europe.
