Qualcomm and Google Team Up to Bring 8 Years of Android Updates to Snapdragon Flagships
Qualcomm has unveiled a plan to extend Android software and security updates for certain Snapdragon mobile platforms, offering support for up to eight years. This initiative begins with devices using the Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform and will eventually include future Snapdragon 8 and 7-series platforms. The goal is to provide manufacturers with a longer timeframe for updates, thereby enhancing device longevity and sustainability.
The program's key feature is its provision of up to eight consecutive years of Android OS and security updates. This includes both Android OS and kernel upgrades. Qualcomm highlights that this represents the longest period of software support it has ever offered for smartphone platforms.

Extended Support Features
The initiative aims to reduce the burden on OEMs by minimizing the need for significant changes to their code. This is achieved through "Project Treble," which allows kernel changes to require driver updates while keeping vendor code largely unchanged. As a result, OEMs may find it less costly to offer extended support.
Security remains a primary focus, with comprehensive updates included throughout the eight-year period. The program also features two upgrades to the Android Common Kernel (ACK) to bolster long-term security, aligning with international cybersecurity standards.
Smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite launching with Android 15 are the first devices included in this program. Future Snapdragon 8 and 7-series platforms will also be eligible, covering the next five generations of Qualcomm ASICs as part of their collaboration with Google.
OEM Discretion and Legacy Platforms
While Qualcomm provides the framework for extended support, it is ultimately up to device manufacturers (OEMs) whether they implement the full eight years of updates. Qualcomm notes that some OEMs have already committed to providing longer-lasting devices.
Previous Snapdragon platforms are not eligible for this extended support; however, Qualcomm will continue addressing software support needs for these legacy platforms separately. The company initially announced this initiative at the Snapdragon Summit, with devices expected to receive extended coverage by late 2024.
Collaboration with Google
Qualcomm has collaborated closely with Google to enable this extended support for Snapdragon platforms. The program aims to simplify the update process for OEMs, potentially reducing costs and allowing for longer device lifecycles.
This initiative marks a shift towards longer-term software support within the Android ecosystem, benefiting both manufacturers and consumers alike. Chris Patrick, Senior Vice President and General Manager of mobile handsets at Qualcomm Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about working closely with Google: "Qualcomm Technologies is excited to take this step forward, working closely with Google to facilitate the latest Android OS upgrades on devices with Snapdragon."
Seang Chau, VP and GM of Android Platform at Qualcomm Technologies Inc., added: "Qualcomm Technologies Inc.'s efforts to extend the lifespan of Android devices are a key step for increasing the longevity of smartphones." This move signifies an important development in extending device lifespans while ensuring enhanced user experiences through seamless software updates.
