Will Qualcomm Enable PC Gaming on Android in 2026? How Snapdragon's DirectX 12 Support Could Make it Happen

Qualcomm’s next major gaming leap on Android may not be only about faster cores or higher frame rates. The bigger change could be DirectX 12 support on Snapdragon chips, a move that may make Windows PC games easier to run on Android phones through emulation and translation tools.

The possibility emerged around Snapdragon Summit 2026, where Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The company has not officially announced DirectX 12 support for either chip. However, testing on a Qualcomm engineering reference smartphone has raised fresh interest in where Android gaming could go next.

Why DirectX 12 on Snapdragon Matters

DirectX 12 is Microsoft’s graphics and multimedia API used widely across Windows PC games and Xbox development. Many modern PC titles rely on it for rendering and performance features. Android, by contrast, typically depends on APIs such as Vulkan and OpenGL ES, which means PC games need extra compatibility layers to work on phones.

Android users can already run some Windows games through tools such as Winlator or GameHub, often with Wine and other translation layers. Custom graphics drivers, including Turnip, have also helped improve compatibility on Snapdragon-powered devices. But results vary sharply by game, device, driver and settings.

Official DirectX 12 support from Qualcomm could reduce some of that friction. It would not automatically turn a phone into a gaming PC, but it may improve compatibility and make translation from Windows graphics workloads more efficient. For users experimenting with PC-game emulation on Android, that could be a meaningful upgrade.

Engineering Phone Reportedly Ran Cyberpunk 2077

China-based YouTuber Geekerwan reportedly tested an unannounced DirectX 12 feature on a Qualcomm engineering reference smartphone using the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The test included demanding PC titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong, with both games said to average just over 30 frames per second.

Those numbers should be treated carefully. Engineering devices are not retail phones, and early software does not always reflect final consumer performance. Sustained gaming also depends on thermals, power draw, driver maturity, memory bandwidth and the cooling design chosen by phone makers.

Still, the reported test is notable because these are not lightweight legacy PC games. Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong are technically demanding titles, even on dedicated gaming hardware. Getting them to run at playable frame rates on a phone-class chip would show real progress in mobile graphics translation.

Qualcomm has not Confirmed a Launch Plan

At Snapdragon Summit 2026, Qualcomm highlighted the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series with a 2 + 6 Oryon CPU layout. The configuration includes two Prime cores clocked at up to 5GHz and six Performance cores at up to 4GHz. The company also discussed AI-focused Adreno matrix cores for gaming features.

Those AI features include super resolution and frame generation through Adreno Neural Fusion. Qualcomm named mobile titles such as Diablo Immortal, War Thunder Mobile and Farming Simulator 26 as examples of games supporting some of these capabilities. DirectX 12, however, was not presented as an official feature during the keynote.

That distinction matters for buyers. A demo or engineering test does not guarantee commercial availability. Qualcomm may still be evaluating driver stability, licensing, developer support or whether the feature should arrive with a future Snapdragon platform instead of the current Gen 6 family.

If Qualcomm does move ahead, DirectX 12 support could become one of the most important gaming features on future Android flagships. For now, it remains an unconfirmed development rather than a promised upgrade. The clearest takeaway is that Snapdragon gaming is moving closer to PC territory, but official support will decide how useful it becomes for everyday users.
