Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 SoC Announced for Affordable Smartphones with Gaming and AI Enhancements

Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 SoC, succeeding last year's Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. This new chip promises significant improvements in performance and efficiency. The Kryo CPU offers an 11% boost in processing power, while the Adreno GPU enhances graphics performance by over 29%. Additionally, it provides a 12% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor.

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 supports a range of advanced features. It delivers a 4K gaming experience and wireless lossless audio. Notably, it is the first in its series to incorporate Gen AI support. The chip retains triple 12-bit ISPs and Qualcomm FastConnect with Wi-Fi 6E capabilities. It also includes Bluetooth 5.4 with dual antennas and Triple frequency GNSS (L1/L5/L2).

Enhanced Performance and Connectivity

This SoC is built on TSMC's 4nm process technology, featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 5G modem-RF system that supports both mmWave and sub-6 GHz bands. It achieves impressive download speeds of up to 2.9Gbps. The integrated Qualcomm Adreno GPU supports OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0 FP, and Vulkan 1.3 for enhanced graphics rendering.

The Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 also boasts hardware-accelerated H.265 and VP9 decoding capabilities. It supports HDR playback codecs such as HLG, HDR10+, HDR10, and HDR vivid for superior video quality. Audio features include the Qualcomm Aqstic audio codec and smart speaker amplifier with Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise (THD+N) at -108 dB.

Camera Capabilities and AI Integration

The camera capabilities are noteworthy, supporting up to a triple-camera setup of up to 16 MP each or a single camera of up to 200 MP with Zero Shutter Lag (ZSL). It can capture videos in formats like HEVC and H.264, offering slow-motion video capture at 1080p @120 FPS.

Qualcomm's Hexagon NPU integrates AI acceleration features such as Hexagon Tensor Accelerator and Vector Extensions for efficient processing tasks. It supports mixed precision operations (INT8, INT16) alongside dedicated NPUs for audio and sensor tasks.

Memory Support and Additional Features

The chipset accommodates LPDDR5 memory up to 3200 MHz and LPDDR4x up to 2100 MHz for optimal performance across applications. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6E with multi-gigabit speeds across multiple frequency bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6GHz), Bluetooth LE Audio, NFC, USB-C Gen3.1 Gen2 interface, UFS3.1 storage support, and Qualcomm Quick Charge technology.

Navigation is enhanced through concurrent GPS systems including Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS NavIC alongside urban pedestrian navigation with sidewalk accuracy ensuring precise positioning even in dense environments. Qualcomm has announced that devices featuring the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 SoC will soon be available from brands like Realme, OPPO, and HONOR in the upcoming months.
