Apple and SpaceX Team Up: iPhones to Get Starlink Satellite Connectivity
Apple's iPhone is set to integrate SpaceX's Starlink direct-to-cell feature, offering satellite coverage, according to Reuters. T-Mobile, a partner in this initiative, confirmed the collaboration. The trial phase is currently underway with SpaceX and T-Mobile testing the Starlink cell network after receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in November of last year.
The initial phase of this feature will enable 'text via satellite' services. Voice and data functionalities are expected to follow later. Before the latest iOS 18.3 update for iPhones, T-Mobile had identified certain Android smartphones as eligible for network testing. This development marks a significant step forward in expanding connectivity options for mobile users.

Starlink Satellite Connectivity
In October 2024, SpaceX and T-Mobile secured FCC approval to connect Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capabilities. This initiative aims to provide cellular coverage in areas of North Carolina severely affected by Hurricane Helene. Previously, T-Mobile had indicated that only Samsung Electronics Co.'s devices like the Z Fold and S24 models would be compatible with Starlink.
Apple offers a Globalstar Inc. service that enables users to send texts and contact emergency services when outside cellular range. Meanwhile, T-Mobile has begun enrolling consumers for an early version of the Starlink service, conducting a Beta test recently.
Beta Testing and Consumer Experience
Initial participants received messages from T-Mobile stating: "You're in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3." This message highlights the new connectivity possibilities available through this collaboration.
A new toggle switch will be available in iPhone cellular data settings to manage this satellite feature. A T-Mobile spokesperson informed Bloomberg that testing will "begin with select optimized smartphones" and eventually "support the vast majority of modern smartphones." This beta version has also been introduced to Android 15 phone users, aligning with Google's latest operating system release.
Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile have been discreetly working on integrating support for iPhone software networks, as reported by Bloomberg earlier. The collaboration signifies a strategic move towards enhancing mobile connectivity through innovative satellite technology.
