Samsung intros solution to bring bokeh and low-light photography to affordable smartphones

Samsung’s affordable smartphones will soon get dual cameras that are optimized to click photos with bokeh effect.

The smartphone market is becoming highly competitive and many companies are coming up with advanced offerings in the affordable market segment. Samsung aims to be all set to take part in the race with the new dual-camera solution that it has introduced. The new solution will combine the ISOCELL Dual image sensors of Samsung and the company's proprietary software in order to bring the bokeh effect and low-light shooting capability to the budget smartphones.

Samsung brings bokeh and low-light photography to affordable phones

The new solution from Samsung is touted to bring the image-taking experience that was so long seen in the premium and high-end offerings from the company even to the entry-level and mid-range smartphones. The commitment of Samsung to stay competitive in the imaging capabilities of smartphones is evident as the company announced the mid-range Galaxy J7+ with dual rear cameras. It looks like this trend will continue further with the new development.

Also, Samsung is providing its in-house technology to the other manufacturers this time in order to increase the number of dual camera smartphones. The company aims to reduce the optimization difficulties with the dual camera setups with this new solution. Samsung is said to have created a library of in-house software algorithms compatible with the ISOCELL Dual sensors in order to enable both bokeh effect and low-light shooting on the entry-level and mid-range smartphones.

These algorithms are sensor-optimized and will render a refocusing feature for the dual camera configuration with 13MP and 5MP sensors. The low-light shooting capability will be seen with a set of two 8MP sensors. However, the same is likely to be exclusive to select Galaxy models to be launched in future. Previously, Samsung had briefed out how its ISOCELL dual camera solution can support optical zoom but it is believed that the technology will be meant for its own smartphones.

At the MWC Shanghai show, Samsung demonstrated its very first ISOCELL Dual camera module. Later, this camera solution made its debut on the flagship Galaxy Note 8 and then with the Galaxy J7+.

As of now, there is no clarity on when the new dual camera solution will be implemented in smartphones. However, it does make us believe that Samsung will bolster its presence in the components market as it already makes DRAM, processors and flash storage to the other OEMs. This is possible if the company starts supplying this camera module to the other OEMs.
