Samsung Exynos 1580 Chip Brings Significant Enhancements Over its Predecessor: Check Features & Specifications

The Exynos 1580 is set to succeed the Exynos 1480, which was a solid mid-range chip but only appeared in the Samsung Galaxy A55 5G. This new processor is expected to power the upcoming Galaxy A56 5G, offering significant improvements over its predecessor.

Built on Samsung's third-generation 4nm EUV FinFET process, the Exynos 1580 features ARMv9 CPU cores and doubles the GPU hardware. The CPU adopts a three-cluster design with one prime Cortex-A720 core at 2.9GHz, three big A720 cores at 2.6GHz, and four A520 cores at 1.95GHz, marking a substantial performance upgrade from the ARMv8 cores of the Exynos 1480.

Enhanced Graphics and AI Processing Power

The GPU in the Exynos 1580 is based on AMD's RDNA 3 architecture and now includes two Work Group Processors (WGP), compared to just one in the previous model. Samsung claims that this results in a maximum performance increase of 37% and a 20% boost at similar power levels as the Exynos 1480. Additionally, this GPU enhances the GL2 cache.

The Neural Processing Unit (NPU) of the Exynos 1580 delivers an impressive performance of 14.7 TOPS, compared to just 4.9 TOPS in the earlier Exynos 1380 model. Although both the Exynos 1480 and 1580 NPUs are described as "6K MAC," suggesting no difference, the new NPU boasts an increased cache capacity of 2MB.

Connectivity and Display Features

The chip supports LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, maintaining connectivity features like sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G, Wi-Fi 6E (ax), and Bluetooth version 5.4. However, it lacks an AV1 decoder. Display capabilities remain unchanged with support for up to 1080p+ resolution at a refresh rate of 144Hz.

Camera support continues with single cameras up to 200MP or dual cameras at a resolution of 32+32MP operating at a frame rate of 30fps, along with video recording capabilities of up to 4K at a frame rate of 60fps. While it's unlikely that the Galaxy A56 will feature a camera with such high megapixels, Samsung has indicated that image processing has been improved in this new chip.

Potential Applications Beyond Smartphones

While primarily anticipated for use in Samsung's Galaxy A56 smartphone expected early next year, there is speculation that this chip could also be integrated into Samsung's Galaxy Tab series. For instance, last year's Galaxy Tab S9 FE+ utilised the Exynos 1380 chip.

The table below summarises key specifications:
