A couple of days ago, we came across a report that claimed that Samsung's much-awaited foldable smartphone will be launched in December this year. However, the report turns out to be inaccurate as DJ Koh, Samsung's chief for mobile business, has confirmed at the CES 2018 that the foldable device will not be unveiled before 2019.

Samsung foldable smartphone will not get unveiled before 2019

If you recall, in 2017, Koh had said that Samsung will unveil its first foldable phone in 2018 only if it manages to overcome all the technical issues. He further explained that the UX of the device has proved be the biggest obstacle, though the company is trying its best to resolve the problem. This is contradictory to the report that said that the South Korean OEM will start the mass production of the foldable phone in November.

The report further claimed that the foldable smartphone will feature a OLED display of 7.3 inches. Since Koh didn't give away any details about the device, we don't know if the claims are true or not.

The rumors of Samsung working on a foldable device are around for years now, more than 6 years to be precise. Back in 2011, the company showed off a prototype foldable device, which kind of looked sturdy. While that was not a commercial product, it certainly reflected the company's ambitions.

Later on, the foldable phone from Samsung was referred as the Galaxy X. Galaxy X appeared in many concept images and videos, indicating how people are excited for the device to come to life.

Some reports say that the will fold inwards so that users can use it like a book. While the concept sounds too good to be true, considering the significant advancement of innovative technology, it is not impossible.

Well, Samsung is not the only one who is experimenting with foldable devices. Another South Korean tech firm, LG, is also testing the technology. In the beginning of last year, the company received a patent for a foldable smartphone.

Coming to another tech giant, Apple recently filed a patent for a foldable iPhone. As per the patent, the company intends to make an iPhone with such a display that can be opened and closed like a book. Of course, filing of a patent doesn't necessarily mean that the device will be launched. However, they give us an idea of what kind of technology the company is experimenting with.

Lastly, it should be kept it mind that, Chinese brand ZTE has already come up with a foldable smartphone. Dubbed as Axon M, the device has dual screens, which are attached by a hinge sort of thing. One display stays attached to the phone's body, whereas the other can be folded to the back or extended outwards.

So it seems like, in the coming years, the trend of foldable smartphones may catch on.
