Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to come sans the in-screen fingerprint sensor
No under the display fingerprint sensor for Samsung this year.
Samsung Galaxy Note 9, slated to launch in August this year, has been doing rounds of the rumor mill for quite some time now. The earlier reports claimed that the phablet will boast a fingerprint sensor placed underneath the display.
However, a new rumor suggests that the Samsung might have dropped the plan of adding the new feature on the Galaxy Note 9 and will go ahead with a rear panel-housed fingerprint sensor.
A lot of manufacturers are reportedly working on implementing the same tech on their smartphones, recent examples being Vivo and Doogee. Many suppliers, for the past couple of years, have been working with Samsung for the in-screen fingerprint sensors, but the technology keeps getting delayed due to technical restrictions. The durability of these sensors is said to be lower compared to traditional sensors.
The accuracy of the sensor also raises concerns. When an optical sensor is employed it takes a toll on the accuracy of the sensor. The fingerprint input is received through an OLED touchscreen, and if a capacitive model is used there are chances that the sensor might underperform.
Although the ultrasonic sensor doesn't have any such issues, they come at a hefty price. Also, they take longer to recognize a print compared to the traditional scanners.
Samsung LSI, Qualcomm, Synaptics, Taiwan's IGES TEC, and Korea's Beyond Eyes have already started working on the development of such sensors. There are chances, we might see the technology becoming mainstream by next year.
Currently, there is only one officially announced handset that features a fingerprint sensor under the display - the Vivo X20 Plus UD. It features an optical sensor developed by Synaptics.
Besides, the company will also be launching the Galaxy S9 on February 25. The smartphone is expected to sport a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display with QHD resolution and will be powered by an octa-core Exynos 8895 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
Optics wise, the smartphone will come equipped with a Dual Pixel 12MP camera that is capable of switching between f/1.5 and f/1.25 aperture sizes. For selfies, the device will have an 8MP front snapper. The device will run on Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box and will have a 3000mAh battery reservoir to fire up the Galaxy S9.
Recently, the known tipster also spilled the beans for Samsung, after posting some renders of the Dex docking station. The new Dex pad is said to be launched alongside the Galaxy S9 Duo. The renders show that the new dock could feature a slew of ports such as a full-size HDMI port, a USB Type-C port, and two full-size USB ports.
