Samsung Galaxy S26 Series Leaks: New Camera Upgrades, Silicon-Carbon Battery, and a Name Change?

Samsung's Galaxy S25 series may have just launched, but leaks and rumors surrounding its successor, the Galaxy S26 lineup, have already started making waves.

Though we are still about a year away from the Galaxy S26's expected January 2026 launch, let's take a look at the latest rumors and leaks surrounding Samsung's upcoming smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Series Leaks: Camera Upgrades, Name Changes, & More

A Major Camera Overhaul for the Galaxy S26 Ultra?

For years, Samsung's Ultra models have been at the forefront of mobile photography, thanks to their periscope telephoto lenses and advanced image processing. However, the Galaxy S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra saw only minor refinements in camera hardware, leaving some users disappointed.

According to a leak from Digital Chat Station, Samsung is considering a major camera upgrade for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, introducing a 200MP periscope telephoto sensor. This sensor is similar to what Vivo currently uses on the X100 Ultra and the X200 Pro. If true, this could significantly improve Samsung's zoom capabilities, potentially bringing better light capture, image clarity, and natural bokeh effects at higher zoom levels.

Interestingly, Samsung already manufactures the 200MP periscope sensor used by Vivo, but it has yet to implement it in its own flagship smartphones. If the rumors hold, this could mark one of the most notable upgrades in Samsung's S-series Ultra models in years.

That said, while the Vivo X200 Pro's periscope camera features a larger 1/1.4-inch sensor, Samsung is reportedly planning to use a slightly smaller 1/1.5-inch sensor in its Galaxy S26 Ultra. This difference in sensor size may impact image quality, but it remains to be seen how Samsung's software and AI optimizations will compensate for the change.

Galaxy S26 and S26 Plus to Finally Get a New Primary Camera?

It's not just the Ultra variant that could see a camera overhaul. Leaker PandaFlash reports that Samsung is testing a new 50MP sensor for the Galaxy S26 and S26 Plus. If this turns out to be true, it would mark the first primary sensor upgrade for non-Ultra S-series models in several years.

Currently, the Galaxy S25 and S25 Plus feature a 50MP main sensor, a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP ultrawide camera-a setup that has remained largely unchanged across four generations. The rumored new 50MP sensor for the S26 and S26 Plus could bring better image quality, improved color accuracy, and superior AI enhancements optimized for next-gen processors.

Samsung has yet to confirm any camera upgrades, but given the growing competition from Chinese smartphone brands like Vivo and Xiaomi, it wouldn't be surprising to see the company prioritize camera improvements in its future flagship lineup.

Potential Naming Changes: 'Ultra' to Become 'Note'?

In addition to hardware changes, Samsung might also be shaking up its naming conventions for the S26 series. According to leaks, the Galaxy S26 Ultra could be rebranded as the Galaxy S26 Note, while the Plus model could be renamed the S26 Pro.

Samsung has previously experimented with the 'Note' branding, particularly with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which featured an S Pen and Note-like design after the discontinuation of the standalone Galaxy Note series. If the rumors are accurate, the S26 Note branding could reinforce the Ultra model's identity as the successor to the Note series rather than just an enhanced Galaxy S device.

However, it's important to take this with a grain of salt, as branding changes are often tested internally and could be scrapped before mass production begins.

Silicon-Carbon Battery: A New Power Source for the S26 Ultra?

Beyond potential camera upgrades and naming changes, Samsung is reportedly considering a silicon-carbon battery for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. This advanced battery technology, already used in flagships like the OnePlus 13, Vivo X200 series, and OPPO's Find X8 lineup, offers higher energy density and improved efficiency over conventional lithium-ion batteries, potentially enhancing battery life and overall performance.

If implemented, a silicon-carbon battery could help extend battery life without increasing the physical size of the battery, allowing for more compact designs or additional internal components.

Expected Launch Timeline

While Samsung has yet to officially confirm any details about the Galaxy S26 series, the company has historically launched its S-series flagships in January or February. Based on past patterns, the Galaxy S26 lineup is expected to launch in January 2026.
