An earlier report from a South Korean publication had also suggested that the Samsung Galaxy S9 duo will feature improved facial recognition technology.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are all set to get unveiled on February 25. And as draw closer to the launch date, more information regarding the smartphones emerge online. While Samsung itself has not given away anything about the specs, the rumor mill has pretty much done all the work. In fact, alleged press renders of the smartphones were leaked a couple of days ago.

Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ may feature more advanced facial recognition

So we already know what the Galaxy S9 duo will bring to the table. Now, another piece of interesting information has been revealed. Well, the Samsung Galaxy S9 will come with more advanced face recognition technology. Folks at SamCentral found a feature called 'Intelligent Scan' after some digging around in Samsung's settings app. So what does this feature do?

As described by Samsung, this feature is a combination of "Iris Scanner and Face Recognition together for better results even in low or very bright light." What's more, there is even a video (embedded below the article) to show how will the 'Intelligent Scan' function.

According to the video, both the iris scanner and camera will be active at the same time regardless of the conditions. However, we are not quite sure whether this means using their combined data or using one as a backup for the other. For example, the iris scanner functions relatively better at night.

As the feature was found in the APK settings, chances are that it will be introduced with the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ next month. That said, we don't think the 'Intelligent Scan' feature will stay exclusive to the upcoming flagships. Presumably, Samsung will make the feature available to its older handsets. The company could roll out the feature to Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy Note users by including it in the Android Oreo update.

This is not first time we are hearing that the Galaxy S9 duo will feature improved facial recognition technology. An earlier report from a South Korean publication had also suggested the same thing. The report even quoted an anonymous industry source who said, "there may be new add-ons through software applications" to make the biometric authentication systems better.

Having a better facial recognition system was a necessity as fooling the facial scanning on last year's Galaxy S8/S8+ was pretty easy by using a high resolution photo of the phone's owner. Hopefully, we won't face the same problem on Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.
