Samsung working on OTA wireless charging tech; patents revealed

Samsung wants to move ahead of the Qi charging technology.

Samsung is reportedly working on an over-the-air (OTA) wireless charging technology for its upcoming smartphones and tablets. If the patent documentation recently released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is to be believed, we might see the new tech in the future.

What's new?

What's new?

OTA wireless charging is different from what we have seen recently. The new tech will not require the device and the charger to be in direct contact. The current form of wireless charging involves the Qi-enabled charging pad that is connected to a power source. Placing the device on the pad will kick-off the charging process.

The OTA wireless charging, on the other hand, offers more range compared to the Qi charger. It will allow users to charge their devices without keeping the phone in direct contact with the charger. The technology would be able to charge the phone from few feet, allowing you to charge the device while using it or when in the pocket.

How practical?

Although the technology seems to be far away from practical use, the latest patents suggest that Samsung has big plans for its upcoming smartphones. This isn't the first time that a company has been tipped to be working on the tech. Few other companies are also said to be working on something similar.

What else?

Samsung also recently filed a patent for a smartphone display that expands when pulled from the sides. The smartphone might double as a tablet.

The patent suggests that the system will comprise of three panels. Only the main display will be visible in the 'phone mode.' To expand the screen, users will have to grab the sides and pull the device outward.

This will unroll two more display sitting on either side increasing the real estate. When not in use, the other two display panels are hidden within the body of the device. Currently, this is just a patent and it's hard to determine how the device would work. Tucking three display panels in a phone will make the device thicker.

Samsung has been long rumored to be working on a foldable smartphone. Many foldable devices have been patented and scrapped more times than we can remember. This may be an indication that foldable phones might not be the future - maybe expandable phones are.
