Sony loses a class action lawsuit in the U.S.: WIll offer 50% refund to Xperia device owners
Sony to offer 50 percent refund to few Xperia device owners after losing a lawsuit in the U.S.
Sony seems to be in a deep soup as it has just lost a lawsuit alleging the Japanese manufacturer of falsely promoting the waterproof feature on the Xperia devices in the U.S. The lawsuit was filed after the manufacturer solely denied the warranty claims submitted by the Sony device owners after their handsets were damaged due to water seeping into the devices.
Amidst such developments, Sony Xperia device owners in the U.S. will now eligible to receive up to 50 percent refund or a warranty extension as a settlement for the class action lawsuit.
Owners will get almost $300 in reimbursement on the handset's manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP). As for covering the extension of warranty, the owners of Sony devices will be getting one year of extended warranty and the device out of the warranty period will get six months of extended warranty.
However, Sony has found itself in such a scenario as the company had originally advertised that their devices are waterproof, and thus many users thinking it is water proof may have submerged the devices in pools or any other water body. Meanwhile, the actual certification given to the hardware was IP58 rating. Now, this meant that the handsets could be submerged in a certain depth of water within a certain period of time.
But as per the plaintiffs, Sony completely misrepresented their products' capabilities as well as wrongfully advertised the product. In any case, the settlement has been reached and the device owners whose service claims were rejected by Sony will now be eligible for a reimbursement.
People who bought Sony devices in the United States are only eligible for submitting their claims. Once that is done, they can either go for a warranty extension or file a request to receive reimbursement for the rejections of service claims. The deadline for the submission of documents is January 30, 2018.
A total of 24 devices is eligible for warranty extension or reimbursement. The refund will be available from a wide range of Sony products that include the low-range products to flagship offerings in both smartphones and tablets. You can check the list below:
