Sony is likely believed to be prepping a flagship smartphone with OLED display. The company is looking for a Display Engineer with experience in mobile displays, especially OLED display.

Sony is one of the smartphone manufacturers in the high-end and premium market segment. Given that Apple and LG have already come up with smartphones featuring OLED displays, Sony is also likely to come up with such a device to compete with the rest in the market. Even some previous reports have speculated that Sony is prepping an OLED display smartphone and the word is that this device could be launched early this year.

Though there were speculations regarding an OLED display phone from Sony, there has not been any concrete evidence regarding the same. The latest leak from a Chinese publication ITHome appears to change this scenario. The report suggests that Sony is looking out for a Display Engineer and that the recruitment exercise is the proof that the company is prepping an OLED display smartphone.

The report cites one of the job descriptions mentioned by Sony reading "Drive display/OLED integration to mobile phone products (design/verification/production)". The other clue citing the same is the list of functional competencies. The second on the list requires a candidate with experience in mobile phone products and mentions that OLED experience is mandatory.

Could be a flagship smartphone

According to the information that has surfaced online, the job listing is said to have been posted initially in November 2017 and update on January 12, 2018. There is no information regarding which upcoming Sony smartphone will have the OLED display but there is a higher probability for the same to be a flagship smartphone.

Why OLED display?

OLED displays have become a trend these days. Sony and other manufacturers announced several OLED products this year at the CES 2018 tech show such as OLED TVs with 4K and 8K resolution. Even last year, Sony announced the Bravia A1E TV with 4K OLED display that uses the Acoustic Surface technology. The OLED display is preferred because it supports incorporating the under-display fingerprint scanner that is a new technology emerging in smartphones.

OLED smartphones we have seen so far

We have seen quite a few flagship smartphones featuring the OLED display technology. Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge came up with the same. Then came the Galaxy Note 7 with a good OLED display despite its fatal battery issue. Last year, iPhone X came with an OLED display and LG also launched the V30 and V30+ phones with the same display technology.
